The only party in America capable of losing to the Republican party is the Democratic party. It's a race to the bottom where the loser wins.

@Devon_Eriksen_ @pika_nekopanda Japan's geography is basically perfect for trains. America's is basically the opposite. We'd need something more like a grid, which is terribly inefficient compared to a single trunk line with local offshoots like trains in Japan.

@eigenrobot From what I understand they don't have many hypersonics/IRBMs but have loads of shaheds and smaller missiles. So I suspect they just scattered the cheap ones all over the country anticipating US/Israel targeting their bases in a conflict. It's what I'd do if I were them.

probably the most glaring shortcoming of the war on the part of the US is the demonstrated inability to stop launches which have just continued at a steady drip after the initial sharp drop hard to know what to make of the why, but it's a real problem

@coldxman I think we need to differentiate MAID from euthanasia. MAID is a bad policy with many obviously perverse incentives (e.g. telling the person to be killed that their organs will save other lives to persuade them to do it, etc.) I can imagine a good euthanasia policy though.

@RockettLord *a one-off movie adaptation of a popular and well-written book outdoes all of the cinematic universe releases at the box office by a mile* Studio execs, thinking hard: "Hmm, should we turn this into a cinematic universe?"

@politicalmath She clarified that she's not opposed to penises at the lesbian orgies, but feels that the presence and ratio of penises should be disclosed to attendees ahead of time. But yes, she will still be called transphobic for it. Such are the times we live in.

@eigenrobot This is the second incident I've heard of. But yes hopefully it's just a wargame and not adversaries. But also I can't imagine it'd be that hard for an enemy state actor to accomplish this either. There's good drone defenses being developed but we need to hurry up.

re base vulnerability, i think even this is too little _everything_ is vulnerable take a minute to work through the consequences of iran getting some shipping containers full of drones into baltimore harbor and launching at DC until the ship was destroyed

@eigenrobot And it seems quite plausible that this is already happening for intel purposes. Maybe that's more valuable than strapping a bomb to them, who knows? But it will suck when whoever is doing this decides the boom is worth more than the intel.

@eigenrobot By the time the feds show up it's just a garage and some radio networking equipment left. The terrorists are gone and using Intel networks to track them down might take weeks. Meanwhile they're being exfiltrated or planning their next attack in a new city.

@planefag I'm honestly kind of worried on behalf of the Japanese folks for the harm American Twitter might do to Japanese Twitter. Negativity and mind viruses are contagious. But it's been a very refreshing change of pace.

@IonaItalia "Will this person specifically (not people demographically similar) be a net positive to our nation? Do they embrace our values and form of government? Are they honest and hard working?" I'd welcome any migrant admitted after earnestly asking those questions. Sadly, they do not.

@IonaItalia Much of the west has come to regard immigration as a form of charity. "Who are we to hog the wealthy nation? Let's share it with those less fortunate." Unfortunately accepting migrants with no criteria is much like bringing random homeless people to dinner. Generous but foolish.

I find it extraordinary that no one ever asked why most of the refugees were young men—the group most likely to be able to survive at home—or what the impact would be of accepting a million additional young men into the country, independently of their nationality or culture.
Rolf Degen@DegenRolf

Male refugees from Afghanistan and Syria in Germany show a keen interest in forming relationships with local women, but the local women show little interest in forming relationships with them. Germany, in particular, received over 1,4 million refugees between 2014 and 2016, predominantly from Muslim-majority countries such as Syria and Afghanistan. The majority of these arrivals consisted of young, single men within prime marriageable age brackets. This study examines partnership preferences of male refugees from Afghanistan and Syria who arrived in Germany between 2014 and 2016 and female residents of similar age. Overall, our results indicate a high level of openness among male refugees towards partnering with female members of the resident population, but a comparatively low level of openness among the latter towards partnering with recently arrived male refugees. This implies a substantial incongruence in partnership preferences among the two groups. Regarding the educational level of a potential partner, we found that all respondents prefer highly educated partners over those with lower levels of education. This suggests that, for refugees, securing a highly educated partner might serve as a means of upward social mobility and integration into higher-status networks in the host society. Furthermore, it is possible that highly educated women, due to their greater exposure to diverse social environments and potentially less discriminatory attitudes, are perceived as more open to intergroup partnerships, making them a more attractive choice for refugees seeking acceptance and social integration. On the other hand, the reluctance of resident women to accept partnerships with refugees is largely explained by their rejection of the ‘imported’ religious Islam. It is possible that resident women perceive the religious practices of newly arrived refugees as different from their own, reinforcing a social distance that limits intergroup partnerships. Moreover, this reluctance might not only reflect religious differences but also concerns about gender norms or perceived lifestyle incompatibilities.

@SandyofCthulhu Interesting, she doesn't realize that all she has to do is tell one dirty joke. Women who play it straight in the office will be surrounded by men playing it straight right back. If you want to be treated like "one of the boys" you have to show them you're not an HR nanny.
