@coldxman I think we need to differentiate MAID from euthanasia. MAID is a bad policy with many obviously perverse incentives (e.g. telling the person to be killed that their organs will save other lives to persuade them to do it, etc.) I can imagine a good euthanasia policy though.

@politicalmath She clarified that she's not opposed to penises at the lesbian orgies, but feels that the presence and ratio of penises should be disclosed to attendees ahead of time. But yes, she will still be called transphobic for it. Such are the times we live in.

@eigenrobot This is the second incident I've heard of. But yes hopefully it's just a wargame and not adversaries. But also I can't imagine it'd be that hard for an enemy state actor to accomplish this either. There's good drone defenses being developed but we need to hurry up.

@eigenrobot And it seems quite plausible that this is already happening for intel purposes. Maybe that's more valuable than strapping a bomb to them, who knows? But it will suck when whoever is doing this decides the boom is worth more than the intel.

@eigenrobot By the time the feds show up it's just a garage and some radio networking equipment left. The terrorists are gone and using Intel networks to track them down might take weeks. Meanwhile they're being exfiltrated or planning their next attack in a new city.

@IonaItalia "Will this person specifically (not people demographically similar) be a net positive to our nation? Do they embrace our values and form of government? Are they honest and hard working?" I'd welcome any migrant admitted after earnestly asking those questions. Sadly, they do not.

@IonaItalia Much of the west has come to regard immigration as a form of charity. "Who are we to hog the wealthy nation? Let's share it with those less fortunate." Unfortunately accepting migrants with no criteria is much like bringing random homeless people to dinner. Generous but foolish.

I find it extraordinary that no one ever asked why most of the refugees were young men—the group most likely to be able to survive at home—or what the impact would be of accepting a million additional young men into the country, independently of their nationality or culture.
Rolf Degen@DegenRolf

Male refugees from Afghanistan and Syria in Germany show a keen interest in forming relationships with local women, but the local women show little interest in forming relationships with them. Germany, in particular, received over 1,4 million refugees between 2014 and 2016, predominantly from Muslim-majority countries such as Syria and Afghanistan. The majority of these arrivals consisted of young, single men within prime marriageable age brackets. This study examines partnership preferences of male refugees from Afghanistan and Syria who arrived in Germany between 2014 and 2016 and female residents of similar age. Overall, our results indicate a high level of openness among male refugees towards partnering with female members of the resident population, but a comparatively low level of openness among the latter towards partnering with recently arrived male refugees. This implies a substantial incongruence in partnership preferences among the two groups. Regarding the educational level of a potential partner, we found that all respondents prefer highly educated partners over those with lower levels of education. This suggests that, for refugees, securing a highly educated partner might serve as a means of upward social mobility and integration into higher-status networks in the host society. Furthermore, it is possible that highly educated women, due to their greater exposure to diverse social environments and potentially less discriminatory attitudes, are perceived as more open to intergroup partnerships, making them a more attractive choice for refugees seeking acceptance and social integration. On the other hand, the reluctance of resident women to accept partnerships with refugees is largely explained by their rejection of the ‘imported’ religious Islam. It is possible that resident women perceive the religious practices of newly arrived refugees as different from their own, reinforcing a social distance that limits intergroup partnerships. Moreover, this reluctance might not only reflect religious differences but also concerns about gender norms or perceived lifestyle incompatibilities.

@SandyofCthulhu Interesting, she doesn't realize that all she has to do is tell one dirty joke. Women who play it straight in the office will be surrounded by men playing it straight right back. If you want to be treated like "one of the boys" you have to show them you're not an HR nanny.

@politicalmath The Heuristic remains undefeated: if you think a job is low value, imagine a world where no one did it. On the list of "jobs I would not want the world to lose" plumbers are near the top. I like my clean running water, hot showers, and flush toilets, thanks.

I didn't realize that Jimmy Kimmel made a follow-up comment to his "plumber" joke. It's kind of perfect that his follow-up is even more elitist and idiotic than his original statement
PoIiMath tweet media
The Real Mike Rowe@mikeroweworks

If you haven’t heard, and even if you have, Jimmy Kimmel said this about Markwayne Mullin, former Senator from Oklahoma, and our newest Secretary of Homeland Security: “We have a plumber now protecting us from terrorism.” Apparently, there has been some backlash. Plumbers were offended, obviously, as were parents of plumbers, spouses of plumbers, children of plumbers, and millions of people who have had a plumber show up when they needed one. Comedians were also offended, (the funny ones, anyway,) along with a surprising number of terrorists - especially those with access to hot and cold running water. However, in spite of the ensuing kerfuffle, @jimmykimmel doubled down. “I’m not upset that the head of Homeland Security was a plumber,” he said, “I’m upset that he isn’t still a plumber." He further elucidated by adding, "I wouldn't put a plumber in charge of Homeland Security for the same reason I wouldn't call a five-star general to pull a rat out of my toilet, OK? We all have our areas of expertise.” Being offended is always a choice, and I don’t choose to be offended by a joke, even one that comes at the expense of the skilled tradespeople my foundation tries to elevate. But I am a tad butt hurt by the suggestion that skilled workers should never evolve into something new, and that competence is somehow limited to one vocation. Obviously, expertise and skill are important. If I need a new kidney, I’d prefer a doctor do the surgery, not a late-night talk show host. But if the doctor in question used to host a talk show, why would I hold that against him? Ten years ago, during one of the presidential debates, @MarcoRubio answered a workforce-related question by arguing that America needed to get shop class back into high schools. He concluded by saying, “What our country needs are more welders and fewer philosophers.” A lot of people on this page commented that Rubio and I were singing from the same hymnal, but in fact, we weren’t. At least not entirely. Because I don’t think the current shortage of welders has anything to do with an overabundance of philosophers. In fact, I think it’s a mistake to promote one vocation at the expense of the other. What we really need in this country, are more welders who can talk intelligently about Aristotle, and more philosophers who can run an even bead. More Generals, in other words, who can fix their own toilets, and more plumbers who can hold a powerful government job. This is what Mullin did. He was a private citizen who mastered an essential skill and then turned that skill into a multi-million-dollar company that employed a lot of people and served a lot of customers. That gave him the freedom to do other things with his life, including a career in public service which got him into Congress, where he’s spent the last eleven years doing whatever Congressmen do. Now, he has a very consequential position in the Cabinet of the current administration. Is that not the embodiment of the American Dream? I get that Jimmy Kimmel might have a problem with Mullin’s politics, but what possible objection could he have about the trajectory of his career, or his desire to do more than one thing with his life? The only sensible thing to do in the wake of a moment this tone deaf, is remind America that the skills gap is wide, and getting wider. The shortage of skilled tradespeople is now headline news and closing it is nothing less than a matter of national security. This year, my foundation has set aside $10 million dollars to help train the next generation of plumbers, and lots of other essential workers. I'm talking about hundreds of thousands of AI-proof, six figure jobs that don't require a four-year degree, waiting to be filled. The money is currently available to anyone who wants to master a useful skill at mikeroweworks.org. Apply today. As for those of you genuinely offended by Kimmel's comments, consider expressing your disappointment with a modest donation to mikeroweWORKS. Our work ethic scholarship is making a real difference, and your money will be well spent, I promise. The donate button is big and red and hard to miss, at mikeroweworks.org I’d love to chat but I’ve gotta pull a rat out of my toilet…

Let's be clear: Spain: enacts rent control -> no more homes Argentina: ends rent control -> tons of new homes Rent control is a better way to destroy cities than dropping bombs on them.
Cato Institute@CatoInstitute

Spain froze rents and capped increases at 2%, but rent control is already cutting supply by up to 50% and not improving conditions for renters. Spain should follow Argentina, which ended rent control in 2023 and has seen housing supply rise 180%, reports Cato’s @hiperfalcon. ow.ly/k7Mx50YztmZ

@karpathy I love making my LLM argue with itself. Then I just take the most convincing side when it's done. "What are the drawbacks to this approach?" "Why would someone disagree with this?" "Is there a better option?"

- Drafted a blog post - Used an LLM to meticulously improve the argument over 4 hours. - Wow, feeling great, it’s so convincing! - Fun idea let’s ask it to argue the opposite. - LLM demolishes the entire argument and convinces me that the opposite is in fact true. - lol The LLMs may elicit an opinion when asked but are extremely competent in arguing almost any direction. This is actually super useful as a tool for forming your own opinions, just make sure to ask different directions and be careful with the sycophancy.

@webdevMason I had a doctor send me home with a topical antibiotic for what turned out to be an internal abscess. The next day I went to the hospital and they admitted me for sepsis and performed emergency surgery like 45 minutes after I walked in the door. I spent 7 days in recovery.

Everyone, every single person has a healthcare blackpilling moment, ideally a nonconsequential one For me it was having to BEG for a strep test after the doctor glanced at my mouth and "couldn't see" the white spots on my tonsils, then acting annoyed with me when it was positive
Allie ✞@allie__voss

I think people have this view of doctors as like, Dr House whose relentless pursuit of truth will stop at nothing to get you the right diagnosis. In reality, most doctors provide the least risky treatment for your most obvious symptoms. That’s it.

@avidseries What holds me back is refueling on road trips. Refilling a tank of gas takes ~1 minute, while an 80% charge on an EV takes about 30 minutes even if you find fast charging. Although I do tend to stop for around 20 minutes in the middle of most road trips anyways, so I dunno.
