I’m excited to announce that we’re co-leading the $10M seed round in @merit_systems, which is building a new economic model for open source. While open source software is the lifeblood of the internet, it’s poorly funded and too reliant on volunteer contributions. Most popular software is filled with dependencies on code maintained by small groups, or even solo developers. To enable a more collaborative and composable internet, a number of projects have tried to evaluate and reward open source contributions after they’ve been made. It’s a compelling idea, but hasn’t succeeded yet at scale yet. Merit is building a protocol that attributes and rewards contributors proportionally to the value they create. The goal is to enable code repositories to become the organizing unit for protocol networks, in the same way that companies are the organizing units for corporate networks. Merit was founded by @samrags_ and @sproule_. I worked for years with Sam when he was an investor and engineer here at a16z. His work on Jolt, one of the fastest and most promising zkVMs, demonstrates Sam’s deep understanding of open source. He is brilliant and hard working. Similarly, Ryan excelled at Blockchain Capital as an investor and engineer. Over the past decade, he and Sam have built a range of open source projects together. @0xMasonH, a gifted technologist and investor also from a16z, joined the Merit team to help them scale. We are excited to back the Merit team and support them with their ambitious mission.
