the saddest thing here is that it's not just this gentleman; even startups funded by peakxv (ex-sequoia india), emergent ventures and the like have really, really bad hiring practices. (i am sharing a true story here) imagine they made you invest nearly 1 month into the whole round. 5 rounds, 1 hr each. for one round, they made you travel to their office. every round was a final round before another round was added. the final round was the interview with the founder on a friday. the founder sent a green light and told the candidate that the hr will connect by monday to finalize the compensation discussion. candidate is elated. the band was already known; the only thing pending is the discussion for the salary. monday comes, no email from hr. around tuesday morning 10 am, the hr calls and says sorry, there's one more round. we want to do a reference check. the candidate although surprised says, please do send me the consent form, i'll sign and share their email id. the hr insists that they only want the number and the linkedin id of the reporting manager with whom they want to do the reference check. shocked. new mode. alright, let me check with her and share her number. she texts her manager (imagine texting your manager for a reference check call about a company you're trying to leave during your notice period). context: before this, the candidate had rejected two more final offers, since this startup and the role were perfect; the only thing pending was the offer/compensation discussion. and the company's hr forced the candidate to join immediately after the candidate's notice period is over. the candidate's reporting manager immediately gets a call, and a manager-level person is on the other end, introducing himself and saying he wants to conduct a reference check (unprofessional and unqualified). comical phrases about the candidate as a "gen-z" and comments about the candidate being very straightforward were discussed; questions unrelated to the candidate's employment were discussed. then the hr ghosted for a whole week regarding the outcome, and after multiple follow-ups, returned on a whatsapp text that they've decided not to go further since the reference check didn't pass. wow! if the bgv didn't pass, the candidate needs to have an opportunity to present defending facts. no consent for bgv was collected. no hr professional did it. it was not taken over email. nothing. the reporting manager who gave the call had not said anything negative. when the candidate asked, the hr has zero information on what happened during the so-called "reference check"/bgv and said that the person and she, both, are on holiday for a week. beautiful. imagine investing 1 whole damn month into a hiring process only to face a completely unprofessional hiring experience with zero compliance. [especially on a funded startup with marquee investors] indian startups need heavy belt treatment.

I’m specifically paying attention to the discussion on urban governance and the infrastructural challenges our cities face, in the session at Stanford between @annamalai_k, @Offtejasvisurya and @ShashiTharoor . All three discussed sensible solutions, ground level reforms, and the need for structural changes, particularly regarding the powers and functioning of mayors. Especially Anna’s very valid point about the direct selection of mayors and the extent of political control over the process which gives a reality check to us.
