@GothHelm @KennyLauderdal3 @Protodude Right. To be clear I'm moreso asking if it's something that's not been archived before; I used to live in Japan and know a few people who could get it but I'd probably not bother getting involved unless it's actually beneficial.

Any of my followers live in or near Fuefuki/Yamanashi? I’ve located a copy of "Do Your Best, Rockman!", the fire and earthquake safety short film that was briefly screened in Japan in the early 1990s and never received a home video release. DM for info!

Let’s go! Mamdani announces new policies to make it faster, easier, and cheaper for small businesses to start and run in NYC. Can we all agree these are positive steps for the city? 1) Cut fines and fees for small businesses by 50% 2) Appoint mom and pop czar with a goal of making it easier to run a small businesses 3) Accelerate permits and applications 4) 500% increase in funding for small business support programs 5) $20m for Business Express Service Teams offering a dedicated city case manager for businesses to help connect them with the information and resources to get off the ground
Zohran Kwame Mamdani@ZohranKMamdani

Soon small businesses won’t have to wait for Small Business Saturday to get attention from their Mayor. Some changes that they can look forward to:

In 2006, two academics, John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, wrote a paper called “The Israel Lobby,” which argued that a loose group of Israel supporters used their connections and financial resources to tilt US foreign policy in Israel’s direction. One of them, Stephen Walt, was academic dean of The Harvard Kennedy School, which put him at the pinnacle of his profession. The savage response to the paper was like nothing academia had ever seen. We can now report that Jeffrey Epstein helped coordinate the counterattack with Alan Dershowitz, while Larry Summers was Harvard president. And Les Wexner was one of the largest donors to the Kennedy School, if not the largest. Epstein controlled Wexner’s money. In other words, a loose group of powerful supporters of Israel used their financial resources and connections behind the scenes to destroy the reputations of two academics who wrote a paper arguing that a loose group of Israel supporters was using their connections and financial resources to shape American foreign policy. @levelsio Consider Kanazawa instead; Shinkansen from Tokyo goes there and it's got similar (ish) historic vibes but not nearly as many tourists go.

@levelsio This is somewhat weighted due to Japan being crushed by tourism in the past few years. Context: lived there for years, going back now even "local" spots are rampant with tourists.

I noticed something new this time traveling that I haven't seen before Asking ChatGPT where to go, it would recommend us to go to specific places, so we went, and we were then surrounded by other foreigners who also were there, and then I saw some of them open their phone and yes there was them also asking where to go to....ChatGPT So you now have ChatGPT being the travel guide for a substantial amount of people, and because it has a tendency to normal/average answers, you kinda end up at normie tourist traps Then even if you ask for more authentic places, those thousands of other people also asked that, so it just funnels hundreds to thousands of people per day to the same exact places You could call it ChatGPT Tourism?

A U.S. colonel was at the scene of Shireen Abu Akleh’s murder within hours and was able to conclude quickly the shooting had obviously been intentional. His boss then covered it up so as not to “displease” the Israelis, the Times reports.

A US colonel who investigated Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh’s 2022 killing by an Israeli soldier concluded it was intentional but his boss undermined that conclusion for political reasons. nytimes.com/2025/10/27/wor…

Note to self: don’t go on a trip to SF when wifey is 35 weeks pregnant - even if your other two kids arrived after 42 weeks 🤣 Thankfully I made it back in time for the birth and bubba no3 arrived safe and sound 👶🥰

If you weren’t around in the late ’90s and mid-2000s, you might not know that Mega Man was a frequent target of criticism in the English-language gaming press. The series was often cast in a negative light for releasing so many sequels. A 2002 Mega Man Outpost editorial captures how we felt at the time.

@joshmanders The real builders dipped out years ago, it's just Linux fanatics doing /. 3.0 now. And to be clear I don't think everything that's graced HN over the years has been great, there's just a clear cultural difference these days.

What the heck happened to HN? I used to love visiting but lately they've just gotten really bad. Today's outrage? Deno is petitioning and doing a gofundme to get Oracle to release the trademark of JavaScript and that's bad because *checks notes* they may get clout and acknowledgement for doing it and being seen as a good company? When did business become highschool bullshit?

Other thing about Japan to Americans with the Japan blindspot It's not a modern "futuristic" country, everything is old and stuck in 1990 China, Korea and then parts of Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand are more modern and futuristic in most ways

Some people might read this as "it's Japan so Street Fighter is common and totally a thing everyone knows about". The other bit is that Japan bar culture contributes a lot to this kind of experience whereas the US has become very silo'd over the years where bar groups don't mix.
iDom@iDomNYC

I'm at a bar in Japan and watching Capcom Cup and everyone in the bar became super interested when Street Fighter was mentioned and watched along. Japan culture is different.

@cifilter @path I remember reading back in the day about how this went to crazy lengths to get performant list views. I don't think it was the only app doing it, but it was certainly a notable one. Always found it impressive.

I worked at Path back in 2012. Today, I found the codebase I had on a hard drive and managed to get it building after all these years. Very broken and unusable with no servers, but I'm about to cry. Working at @path was probably the best time of my life. 🥹
