This petrol/diesel discussion has been very illuminating; thanks to everyone who has joined in. You dieselists are a defensive lot. Yes torque, yes mpg, yes energy density, blah blah blah. But you know, don’t you, deep in the deserted carport of your hearts, that when you reach for the black nozzle at the fuel pump, everyone around you looking on feels a pang of pity for you. And you feel one for yourself.

@ciphergoth @quirkyllama I am. I am a founder member of one of the biggest skeptical organisations in the world. There are all sorts of things I don't believe in, and many are far more plausible than this. AGI is not impossible, but it's very very hard and LLMs are not a path towards it.

@ciphergoth A blog post won't work because it's not true, Paul. Generative AI is homeopathy for geeks: the principle is false, the application of it is false, and the tests demonstrate it to be false.

@_imey @TomWright165389 @peterrhague Your hypothesis is that in 2024, Dubai mounted a worldwide marketing effort to redefine the term "dubai chocolate" because years earlier a few /pol/sters had used the words "dubai" and "chocolate" in the same paragraph?

It’s important for people to understand that SEO is real, widely practiced and not at all a conspiracy theory. Of course “dubai chocolate” was invented to drown out embarrassing internet traffic. How can anybody doubt it?
sawa░💢🍇░sama \VentureTradeCo/@SourGrapeVA

Heard a weird conspiracy theory about "Dubai Chocolate". How Dubai wanted to push this stupid chocolate fad so it would be front and center in online search results and algorithms instead of their other "Dubai chocolate" enjoyed by only the finest Instagram models. lol

@TomWright165389 @peterrhague Very far fetched. The *idea* that rich guys in Dubai were doing horrible things to instagram girlies isn't new at all, it was just never called "dubai chocolate".

My brother brutally assaulted a 14 year old girl. She was riding her bicycle and ran her off the road, shoving her off of her bike, punching her repeatedly. Then he dragged her into the woods, beat her some more, threatened her, then surried away when another vehicle approached. He was convicted and spent over 15 years in prison. I haven't spoken to him in well over a decade, once I got past the lies to the truth. My kids will have no relationship with their uncle. His own son has denounced him. Tucker is sick. This is evil.

A lot of Brits realising that, 1/ America is quite a lot richer than the UK now, and you buy football tickets in nominal dollars, not PPP dollars. 2/ American sports price to the market in a way that European sports, especially football, typical don't. Much higher prices ranges.

I was on a train across China with an English teacher eager to talk about all the new construction. When asked about opposition, she said the elderly always oppose it so they have a public hearing for them to complain. Then they ignore them and build. America must do the same.

Texan boyfriend just explained that we aren't allowed to have an August-born child, because that child will be the youngest in their class and therefore, when they play sports, will be smaller than all the other kids and therefore will have a harder time. Is this seriously the shit you guys think about? He's not joking either. I genuinely don't know what to do with this. Planning kids around them playing football is so America-coded though lmao. 😂

This is one of the most important charts in UK fiscal policy. Wage growth tends to be followed by higher inflation with a one year lag. This means that the state pension gets up-rated *twice*, thanks to the triple lock – and any further increases compound. This 'double dipping' is completely unsustainable. The natural trajectory of the triple lock, if we didn't change it, would be to eventually consume the whole of UK GDP. That's why in a new report with @BritishProgress, we propose reformulating the earnings component of the lock such that it uses a 'past 10 year average'. This would avoid the double dipping scenario described, and save £6.2bn for the taxpayer in 2030, rising to over £35bn pa in 2045, without changing the fundamentals of the triple lock.

Ezra Cohen@Ezra_Cohen_

The triple lock has been vital to protecting pensioner incomes and lifting people out of poverty. But with pressure on Government finances mounting, how can we reform the triple lock to make it more sustainable? In today’s @britishprogress paper, we propose a long-term solution:
