@whyvert I remember vividly recommending a book to a professor in my first year of graduate school and being told that the book was good but 'problematic because it is essentialist' and grappling with all of the implications of that one little sentence.

Many deny the existence of things like human nature, innate intelligence, western civ, races, habitual criminals, sex differences, nations.
They call it anti-essentialism.
These things are supposedly oppressive. But recognizing them is needed for flourishing.
