I think future historians will view islamism as having had much less historical significance than much of the discourse the last few decades has suggested

@robinhanson Yes, many small polities were non-autocratic. But large polities were always autocratic.

Mexico City is a big plot twist. Most people expect gray mega city vibes but instead it hits you with jacarandas, giant parks, bougainvillea, gorgeous architecture and tree-lined streets. Love it here!

Lynn vindicated again w successful replication conducted by Nigerian researchers. Woke activists like Rebecca Sears unjustifiably retracting Lynn’s IQ data is ironically counterproductive to helping the human capital issues of Global South, by slowing & censoring IQ research 😕

@whyvert I remember vividly recommending a book to a professor in my first year of graduate school and being told that the book was good but 'problematic because it is essentialist' and grappling with all of the implications of that one little sentence.

Many deny the existence of things like human nature, innate intelligence, western civ, races, habitual criminals, sex differences, nations. They call it anti-essentialism. These things are supposedly oppressive. But recognizing them is needed for flourishing. Article:

New article: Modern Folk Beliefs VI: Anti-Essentialism. The history and consequences of the denial of human nature and of cultural difference. I go into how anti-essentialism became mainstream over the 20th century, the consequences of this, and its future.

Bloomberg sets out scenarios for the Iran war. Ceasefire or regime change are unlikely (I agree) A couple more weeks of high-intensity war transitioning to a longer low-intensity war seems probable.

We've updated our scenarios for the #Iran war over the next 4 weeks. In order of likelihood: 1. Lower-intensity war 2. High-intensity war 3. Ceasefire 4. Iran's collapse. Most likely: high-intensity for another week or two, then shift to low-intensity. Why? 1/2

@PetjaYlitalo I feel misinformed. I've been inflating my tires to the pressure needed for a full load, instead of the appropriate pressure for a light load.

@whyvert Attention of people is expensive, only very often used options should be so visible. For alternative tire pressures, manual of car is right place.

The tire pressure sticker by a car's door. In Europe, two different pressures for normal and full load are listed. Whereas in the US only the full load pressure is listed. The Euro way seems better. More informative. Eg Euro sticker PSI higher if fully loaded:

They never deny the existence of things like the ruling class, the world capitalist system, patriarchy, racism, oppression, exploitation, victimhood, indigeneity, indigenous knowledge, etc. Most of which are totally fake.

British Muslims and the British public live in the same country. They do not share the same world. On every Western adversary, Iran, Russia, China, British Muslims are dramatically more favorable than the general public. On every Western ally, they are more hostile.

@whyvert Not worth the complexity. People adjusting tire pressures depending on load something like 1% of population.
