I was wondering what Arteta meant by those comments. It seems to me that Eze is a player who wants to be much more involved in the game. His role on the pitch has changed since then. Initially he played much higher up and had games where he was almost invisible. I dont think that suited him at all. He acts like an artist and wants to have more of a say in the game. He isnt just a player who should look for space in the final third and try to impact the score from there. I mean he does that too but now he has more freedom to roam and be on the ball. He feels important because of this. I already liked his performance against Leverkusen but today he was even better.

I realy dont think Pep outsmarted anyone here to be honest. Citys win was deserved but it didnt come from some crazy tactical trick that restricted us in a way we couldnt predict. They didnt even have much of a threat before goal but we were our own worst enemies by giving the ball away so fast. From late in the first half until the second goal, every time we won the ball, we just gave it right back. Collectively, we simply failed to keep it.

I think whoever played for Arsenal against Man City the result would have been the same. Pep absolutely schooled Arteta tactically. I’ve not seen us so restricted in a long time. So much to learn going into the Etihad match. All part of the process. Get behind the boys.

I totaly disagree with this take. Kepa made a mistake there is no doubt about that but I personaly understand the decision to start him. For us these are just names or pictures on the internet but these are real people with their own desires and emotions. If you want to have a valuable backup and you promised him a start in specific competitions then dropping him for the final breaks your authority as a leader. Given that Kepa joined us as a starting Premier League keeper with experience at Real Madrid I am sure the club made that commitment to him. Breaking that promise can destroy your authority as a leader and Raya playing wouldnt guarantee a win anyway. People just want to have scapegoats to shoot at so they can process their own frustration but it is never that simple.

Just some thoughts to add: 1. Zubimendi is not as elite as a first phase receiver when put under pressure 2. ⁠Rice still can’t be a first phase receiver. 3. ⁠Arsenal without Odegaard lack presence in the build up

For us these are just names or pictures on the internet but these are real people with their own desires and emotions. If you want to have a valuable backup and you promised him a start in specific competitions then dropping him for the final breaks your authority as a leader. Given that Kepa joined us as a starting Premier League keeper with experience at Real Madrid I am sure the club made that commitment to him. People just want to have scapegoats to shoot at so they can process their own frustration but it is never that simple.

Kepa’s mistake was not a random event, it was a direct result of City’s pressure. They began to dominate in nearly every phase of play: pressing, counterpressing, and regular progression into the final third and the penalty area. The passing maps of both teams reflect this spell

For me the bigest problem was how we allowed ourselves to be totaly dominated from the end of the 1st half until the 2nd goal. We simply didnt have any fast wingers (Saka and Trossard) who could receive the ball in open space to push City back. On top of that Havertz and Gyokeres couldnt hold the ball or exchange 2 or 3 passes with anyone before the team could move up from deep defense. It was just wave after wave of City attacks and we had no way to break the rhythm.

Gutted doesn’t cover it- had a bad feeling about the game. I’m looking at the way we approach one off knockout games & I can’t help but feel the aggression we show in our OOP is more passive. Never make big decisions after a tough loss but there’s a pattern there imo

Even though I am a big fan of MLS the problem today was actualy somewhere else. We simply couldnt get out of our own penalty area from the end of the 1st half until the 2nd goal went in. What we needed was a realy fast winger who could receive the ball in open space and stretch them or we needed an attacking midfielder/CF to exchange 2 or 3 passes and hold the ball to let the team push up. MLS wouldnt be able to just start dribbling when we were being totaly dominated like that.

Arteta watched his team struggle to get out from their own 3rd basically from the mid point of the 1st half, the two up top lose almost every long ball duel or turn it over every time and didn’t make a change until they conceded. He had solutions on the bench

With all due respect but it wasnt just about Citys tactical change today. The real problem was the profile of our starting XI especially on the wings. Saka and Trossard simply didnt have the explosive pace to get the ball in open space and push them back. At the same time in the central zones Havertz and Gyokeres couldnt hold the ball up well enough to let the team breathe. From the end of the 1st half until the 2nd goal it was just wave after wave of City attacks and that is what destroyed us.

Pep threw a spanner into the works. He changed tactics both in AND out of possession. No doubt Lijnders had a big say in the defensive approach which stifled Arsenal's build-up. Arsenal failed to adapt in both moments. It's a masterclass from Guardiola and his staff. No doubt.

In their defense, I think the biggest issue was the link between defense and attack. Havertz and Gyokeres felt forced out there. Without Odegaard and Eze, it's hard not to justify the team's struggles. We let ourselves get dominated and couldn't get out. The wings lacked the pace to exploit open space, while Gyokeres and Havertz couldn't hold the ball up to let the team push out. City’s wave after wave was just too much for us.

Don't think we rly learnt anything new today. We still have no solutions when a team look to exert any sort of pressure high (was more of a block than full on press but still incapable of playing BTL), still don't have the offensive quality to play effectively on transition.

It’s about more than just picking a player for the pitch. It is about hierarchy and authority. If you make a promise and then back out, how can you expect to be respected as a leader? You have to deliver on your word. Arsenal had much bigger problems than Kepa's mistake; that’s just a simplified analysis.

The structural issue was way biger than any individual mistake today. We had no way to move the team up from deep defense because the connection was broken. Saka and Trossard didnt have the pace to stretch them and Gyokeres couldnt stick the ball to his feet. Havertz was technicaly our RCM but he was forced so deep that he had no gas left to join the attack. It was just a matter of time before City punished us for being so passive.

I realy think focusing on one error is ignoring the 15 minutes of wave after wave of City attacks. We were sitting far too deep and our wings simply lacked the speed to release the pressure. Gyokeres failed to be that physical anchor we needed and Havertz looked spent trying to cover the RCM role while also being expected to lead the line. Without a bridge between the lines we were just waiting for problems.

In fact it started at the end of the 1st half already because we didnt have a reliable outlet to hold the ball. Our wings with Saka and Trossard just didnt have the explosive pace to get us out of defense under that pressure. Gyokeres couldnt hold the ball up well enough and Havertz was either too deep or simply lacked the energy to work as RCM and then sprint forward as the highest man.

Arteta tried to play higher in 2H by pairing Hincapié-Cherki & #6-#42: City’s best manipulator vs a defender who was was on a yellow. A mistake. It was Calafiori at HT. Even though 0-1 was on Kepa. Cherki basically played free, so was by far the attacker with the most touches.

You can tell your players this is important as much as you want as a coach But when you start kepa, don’t risk timber and Eze (before a 2 week break) it transmits something to your team

yes, he could hold the ball for a few seconds, which would allow the team to go on the offensive a bit but we didn't have anyone in the central zone (Havertz, Gyokeres) who could hold the ball and we didn't have anyone on the wings who was fast enough to pass the ball to him into the free space.

Call me crazy, but that’s not the worst possible outcome for Arsenal. Why? City were dominant, so it’s highly likely they will use similar tactics in the league game. They were caught off guard tactically with Pep’s changes today. In the league, Arsenal won’t be so surprised.
