This is the story of how I nearly lost everything to activist Swedish Social Services.
In 2017, my family and I were living in Sweden.
I had lived there before as a single man. We thought it was the safe, stable, open society everyone in the West keeps praising.
What happened instead nearly destroyed us.
I am a former Marine with a couple combat deployments to Afghanistan (this detail matters) and was part of Marine Corps Forces European Command in Germany. I worked for Amazon Web Services with a Nordic focus, staged in Stockholm
I managed teams across Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland.
We lived in the countryside, paid taxes, followed every rule. We even insisted on speaking the local language.
We tried to be the ideal expat family.

@bankertobuilder Please stop with these fakes (no parking for a Target) and high rises where there is zero demand or prove you are not fake by listing the name of the town. If you really did this, the location would be the first thing you named for marketing.
English

It's sad to see former thriving towns in Middle America decay
No one wants to move here
Real estate is dirt cheap
So I bought up land and redeveloped one
Now we have hundreds of new citizens moving in, property values are rising again, and the residents have access to luxury amenities like a brand new Target
This is the template for what we're going to do all over the Midwest

@dilanesper Leftists have had a lot of practice tearing down statues over the past few years.
English

It is morbidly funny that we take 25 years to build a transit station but we can get all the Cesar Chavez memorials down in 12 hours.
Lex Steppling@LexStepp
The tearing down of Cesar Chavez’ legacy in the form of monuments and murals etc in Los Angeles is the fastest I’ve ever seen L.A politicians move.

@lorddrey The Suez Canal is entirely within Egypt.
The Panama Canal is entirely within Panama.
The Bosporus Strait is entirely within Turkey.
The St Lawrence Seaway is mostly within Canada but partly shared with the US.
The Strait of Hormuz is not entirely within Iran.
English

Iran has kept the Straight of Hormuz toll-free for decades despite being vilified, sanctioned, and Isolated.
Egypt charges $300,000 – $700,000+ per transit through the Suez Canal. Ultra-large container ships or tankers can exceed $1 million.
Panama charges $150,000 – $450,000 per transit. Large Neopanamax ships cost up to $500,000+ to pass the Panama Canal.
Turkey charges fees for the Bosporus Strait.
Canada charges fees for the St Lawrence Seaway.
The United States charges for the St Lawrence Seaway.
But Iran is a bad country.

@WallStreetMav A real hospice wing or an imaginary California hospice wing?
English

@problogger Tried it again and now it's loading. Not sure what was going on before.
English

@problogger I can't get it to work. When I click "Sign in", nothing happens.

I've been quietly building a Bible reading tracker — it's called Chapter by Chapter. Free, simple, works in your browser, no account needed. If you're trying to read more of the Bible and want something to mark your progress, this might help. Find it at bible-trackz.pages.dev

@SAshworthHayes Hey, man, price of living in a vibrant, diverse city.
English

@DanFriedman81 I assume his shirt continues "...CAN CONVICT ME."
English

This guy gets arrested so much he has multiple mugshots where he is wearing the same outfit.
He was on public transit with a hammer in each hand screaming about how he was going to kill white people, and he is currently roaming free in Chicago.
Why do they keep letting him go?
End Wokeness@EndWokeness
UPDATE: The man in the video is ID'd as Eric F. Vinson. 30 prior assauIt arrests.

@PlatoonPod "I forgot my wallet...but I do have a bag of brand new Goth clothing."
English

@Civixplorer My favorite part of this graph is how it points out that English is no longer the national language of the UK.
English

@haugejostein For your convenience, here's a link where you can read up on it:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_…
English

@haugejostein The building is blocked on other sides by walls, concrete barriers, etc.
Perhaps you're not old enough to remember the Oklahoma City bombing 31 years ago.
If you were, you'd understand what a truck bomb can do to a building, and then you'd understand why this is necessary.
English

@SrenK6 @TheCinesthetic Definitely agreed on Airplane and Top Secret.
The Naked Gun...tried to watch that recently with my family, and throughout the whole thing it felt like the timing was off. I felt like I was having to make an effort to laugh.
English

@TheCinesthetic Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker has a filmography that is up there with the greatest. I mean Airplane, Top Secret and The Naked Gun are probably all in top-10 comedies of all time

@cremieuxrecueil Are there _any_ drug trials that actually compare to the prevailing drug rather than to a placebo?
I had the impression that companies prefer testing vs. placebos because when they test vs. an existing drug they might lose.
English

I think what we have to do is clear:
Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) needs to be treated as the standard of care for weight loss and it needs to be an active comparator in trials going forward.
Everyone knows these drugs work, so we can't do inert placebos anymore.
Crémieux@cremieuxrecueil
This is not good: People have learned that GLP-1s are really effective, so if they're not losing weight, they know they're in the placebo group. So these people getting placebos are getting mad and leaving the trials.

@AdamDraper Here's the attempted domain takeover case, for people who are curious and don't mind a bit of legalese:

@GigaBasedDad Raised Churches of Christ.
Flirted briefly with Messianic Judaism.
Now Eastern Orthodox for over a quarter-century.
English

@cremieuxrecueil Hmmm, I remember this story line from House.
