This isn't new. As a military prosecutor stateside while 🇦🇫 conflict was still going I saw at least a dozen of these cases.
Some barracks lawyer tells a schmuck who wants an easy way out that the quickest way to make it happen is to toke up. I've also seen some spontaneously burst into tears when they find out the best they can hope for is a general discharge (sometimes an OTH depending on the circumstances) and so they automatically forfeit their GI Bill.
