what happened was, something like: in the late 1990s, a lot of press was given to complaints that parents were paying $18, 20, 30 thousand per year to have their kids instructed by TAs, and this simply wouldn't do (was this inadequate instruction? I'm not sure anyone cared)

a major gripe i have with US higher ed is probably one you haven't thought of so, adjuncts adjunct professors used to be roles open for e.g. people who were career professionals who wanted to give back by teaching a class or two in their spare time
