I’m not concerned that Leo has influence over Catholics in the Admin. I know Rubio and Vance aren’t moved by this. And I don’t have firm feelings about Iran other than I want ZERO foreign interests feeling they get a say in what the U.S. does. The only question should be what is best for Americans. And I believe that the Pope’s statements directed at Trump on Iran and immigration (as opposed to statements of general principle) are, to put it mildly, creating negative feelings in American Protestants. At least the conservative ones. And please know I go after politicking Protestant leaders MUCH harder.

I say this in all sincerity: the country would be MUCH better off if the Vatican had even a fraction of influence with the White House that Protestant Zionist pastors have. Whatever influence Pope Leo has is nothing compared to the influence that these Protestant leaders have.

@EWErickson It takes months of study (typically) to become Catholic. I doubt many are doing it as flippantly as you claim. If one wants a shallow, performative church there are better options than the Catholic Church and I'll just leave it at that.

It strikes me as performative that so many of podcastistan identify as Catholic. It is a far more ritualistic denomination than most Protestant denominations (kneel, sign of the cross, etc), is perceived as more formal and refined, and is much more hierarchical. So the denomination choice mirrors the biases of the podcasters. (Edited to change performative to ritualistic because some online whiners got emotional over that word, refusing to look at the parenthetical to see what I meant by the word, because online people are insufferable whiners)

Nearly everyone on my parish council has a graduate degree (with several having Ivy League graduate degrees).

In any conflict, present or historical, I always ally with the side that doesn't prosecute nuns. It is the most fail-safe heuristic in all of history, politics, and economy, when it comes to distinguishing the good side from the evil side.

Americans are suffering. It is way too expensive just to live for most families. Our cities aren’t safe. Our country is being transformed every day by foreign migration. Our elections aren’t secure. The SAVE act was not passed and won’t be passed. It’s time to end this war in Iran and focus on our country, our people, our future. Far too much of Trump’s second term has been spent on foreign adventures. It has to end. Turn the attention back home.

What's actually happening here is the President has embraced the "mad man" theory and is trying to convince the Iranians that he's willing to do whatever to wipe them out in hopes of getting a deal. The failure is that the President, like so many others, doesn't actually appreciate that the Iranians are mad men who live in a fundamentally religious world where they really do believe they are to wipe out Israel and their citizens are expendable. But no, this is not an unhinged President. It's a man playing a role as a negotiation tactic. Unfortunately, the President is going to be backed into a corner of extreme options by doing this, or be mocked for TACO again.
