#EYEONEGYPT DIARIES - DAY 2 🇪🇬
On Day 2 of our last #EyeOnEgypt tour for the season, many of our guests decided to take us up on the optional day-long excursion to Alexandria, while a couple of them decided to stay back in Cairo and walk around the city on their own. We left for Alexandria after an early breakfast and drove towards the Mediterranean Sea to the north of Cairo, seeing plenty of vineyards on the way. In Alexandria, our first stop was the Catacombs, a burial site dating back to around the 1st-3rd century BCE, a time when Egypt was under Greek rule. (The city of Alexandria, in fact, gets its name from Alexander the Great who invaded Egypt and built the city in the 3rd century BCE.) Our guests saw how Greek and Egyptian burial customs came together in this period. They also saw the different burial processes for different social classes.
Our next stop was Pompey’s Pillar, a relic from the time when Alexandria came under the Romans, and also passed by a Roman amphitheatre. Next, we visited the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a modern library and museum complex with very interesting architecture. The library commemorates the ancient library of Alexandria that was burnt down in the 4th century CE, and is said to have been built very close to the original library’s location.
After a seafood lunch at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, we explored the Qaitbay Citadel, built at the location of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Lighthouse of Pharos. Next, we drove along the Corniche, best described as Egypt’s Marine Drive before returning back to Cairo.
On Day 3, we will head to Saqqara to see the world’s oldest pyramid.

#EYEONEGYPT DIARIES - DAY 3 🐪
On Day 3 of our final #EyeOnEgypt tour for the season, we woke up to rain in the desert! We started the day at 7 am to beat the crowds at the Saqqara Necropolis at the outskirts of Cairo. Our first stop was the world’s first ever stone structure – the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the prototype of all the pyramids we will see on the tour. Thanks to the rain, we got a clear view of two other early pyramids some distance away at Dahshur – the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid. We also entered into a pyramid, that of Unas, which has the earliest use of hieroglyphs. Our guests were left in amazement with the walls decorated with hieroglyphs and the ceiling decorated with stars.
More amazement followed at the Mastaba of Kagemni in the same complex. The walls here had detailed and intricate artworks depicting daily life in ancient Egypt. We then paid tribute to the man responsible for the pyramids, the architect and polymath Imhotep, at the Imhotep Museum. Next, we visited the site of the ancient capital of Memphis, where a giant, incomplete statue of Rameses II blew everyone’s minds.
After lunch at the banks of the Nile, we headed to the old Egyptian Museum, the oldest museum in Egypt, to see its treasures and understand the ancient Egyptian civilisation. After a brief rest at the hotel, we went to Moez Street in Old Cairo to see another facet of the city – its Islamic heritage. We saw many mosques, madrasas and sabeels in contrasting architectural styles favoured by the two leading Islamic dynasties that ruled Egypt – the Fatimids and the Mamluks. Our walking tour of Moez Street ended with coffee at the Khan El Khalili Market.
On Day 4, we will tick off a major item from our bucket lists – the Great Pyramids of Giza.

#EYEONEGYPT DIARIES - DAY 1 🐪
We began a new #EyeOnEgypt tour yesterday - our 6️⃣th this season! From a sweltering 37 degrees in Mumbai, we went to a cool and bracing 14 degrees in Cairo, where we were welcomed with Keffiyehs, the traditional Arabic headgear which also can function as scarves. After a quick stop for breakfast at a local eatery where we had our first taste of Egyptian food - fava beans and falafel - we headed to the Baron Empain Palace to discover a building designed like an Indian temple in an Egyptian city. It made just the right setting to know the connections between India and Egypt since ancient times. We also heard about the Palace’s fascinating history. Next, we visited the @NMEC17 National Museum of Eqyptian Civilisation, where we were given an introduction to the important phases in Egyptian history from prehistoric times to the ancient Egyptian civilisation to the Greek and Roman era to the arrival of Christianity and Islam. The highlight of the visit were the mummies on display, which were not allowed to be photographed. After an Egyptian lunch, we checked into our hotel for a well deserved rest. On Day 2, most of the group will head to Alexandria for a day-long excursion.

@mumbaiheritage I remember @BharGo8 saying that the word Bombay was first used in 1664 by some Portuguese Governor.

Fact Check: Mumbai is older than "Bombay." 🕵️♂️📜
While the official change happened in 1995, the name Mumbai dates back centuries to the Koli goddess Mumba Aai.
European maps from the 17th century even use "Mombaim"—proving that the British "Bombay" was actually a deviation from the original! 🗺️⚓

You might have visited the Jantar Mantar observatory in Jaipur, but #DidYouKnow there’s an even older astronomical observatory in Uzbekistan?
Long before the giant sundials of Jantar Mantar were built, a 15th-century ‘scientist-king’ of Samarkand, Ulugh Beg, built an observatory that became the greatest scientific centre of the medieval world. Its most impressive feature was a gigantic stone sextant — an arc so large it was taller than a five-storey building. Part of it was built deep into the ground to keep the instrument perfectly stable while astronomers measured the positions of stars.
Using nothing but shadows and stone, Ulugh Beg mapped over 1,000 stars and calculated the length of a year as 365 days, 6 hours, 10 minutes, and 8 seconds. Even without modern computers or telescopes, he was off by only about 20 minutes from the value we use today!
After Ulugh Beg’s death, the observatory was destroyed in political turmoil and forgotten for centuries until archaeologists rediscovered it in 1908.
Walk beside the original stone arc and stand inside the trench where astronomers once measured the movements of the universe hundreds of years ago on the #UltimateUzbek tour with Khaki Tours. Await the announcement of the next tour, coming soon.

Kazakhstan’s Charyn Canyon is often called the miniature ‘Grand Canyon.’ Though not as high as its American counterpart, it is equally impressive.
One of its sections is called the Valley of Castles. It looks exactly like a ruined city, except it was built entirely by nature. Over millions of years, wind and water chiselled the red sandstone into shapes that look like tall fortress walls and jagged watchtowers to create this beautiful architectural illusion.
💡 #DidYouKnow? This ‘ruined city’ is actually a high-altitude fortress for nature’s most elite hunters. Look up and you’ll spot Golden Eagles– Kazakhstan’s national symbol, Siberian Ibex and even rare Bearded Vultures with 10-foot wingspans.
