Top 25 WIN for UVA Wise Baseball over #13 LR! Carter Babb homered twice and Jake Smith put the Cavs ahead for good with a solo shot, as UVA Wise earned a split with a 4-2 game 2 victory!

@RobertStock6 I would call it a 2-seam cutter, to match his 4-seam cutter Except I don't know if anyone throws a 2-seam cutter, so there's no name for that! Most cutters are 4-seam, so there's no need to qualify cutters... until now

I forget the name of the pitcher that has the "backwards slider" but Camilio Doval is throwing 98 mph "backwards sliders" and that's disgusting. Why is it not a sinker and actually a "backwards slider"? It has very little horizontal tail. As little as 6" arm side. That's the hallmark of a uniquely different pitch than a traditional sinker, because its spinning more like a football (gryo spin) than a sinker/2-seamer. AT 98 MPH!!!! 🤮🤮🤮

@engineeringolf @ButtrillCarey Maybe something to do with average score/differential? Typically the difference between handicap and average is about 3 for scratch, 4 for 10 HCP, 5 for 20 HCP etc. That could explain the extra 2 strokes.

@ButtrillCarey Thanks for the input Carey. Yes this seems to be the logic. I’m sure I’m not alone in wishing that all “bogey golfers” were simply calculated as 18. But I’d love to learn how the USGA arrived at 20 and 24.

Your once-and-for-all guide to Slope Rating. Designed to be bookmarked as your pocket reference, or sent to your buddy who asks. I got you. Slope is a way to measure how the course will play for a Scratch Golfer vs. a Bogey Golfer. Lots of hazards and distance = High Slope. This means a 20 hcp will need more (~24) strokes from a 0 hcp. The following elements can be confusing, so let's break 'em down: 1. Course Rating - On scorecards. The "Expected" Score for a 0 hcp. 2. "Expected" Score - the USGA uses this language and has mislead many into thinking they should expect to shoot their handicap on an avg day. A scratch player will shoot their handicap ~20% of the time. Expected score is a good day. 3. Bogey Rating - Used to calculate slope. The expected score for a 20 handicap. Can be found online, but not included on scorecards. 4. Multiplier - The USGA has arrived at 5.381 for men and 4.24 for women. If anyone knows how this was derived, please lmk.

@Bill_Steven37 @engineeringolf what would be better for everyone is to shorten courses and add loft back onto clubs. Go back to shaft lengths and lofts in the 70s and 80s. Gapping would become less of a problem. Adding Length to courses just increases the gapping problem.

Marty is spot on here, so I want to amplify this post. He’s a must follow. In my article yesterday, I advocate for progressive increasing yardage gaps. It’s not trivial to get there, but hopefully it stoked some consideration. Based on response, one thing is clear to me: modern loft gaps are a struggle for many distance iron players. There’s opportunity to educate & redesign here.

@Roddygra @engineeringolf Fair point, but as a longer hitter playing courses shorter than PGAT length ... I don't have too many 200+ yd approach shots. When I do, I'm only a 3 HCP & not good enough to consistently stuff it within a couple yards.

@Bill_Steven37 @engineeringolf But then you have much larger differences between the long irons and much smaller gaps between the short irons. 20 yard differences between 5 and 6 irons is a lot. 20 yards is short of a green or over the green. Distance control is much harder with long irons than short irons.

@Roddygra @engineeringolf *Target percentage yard increase gaps, not percentage loft gaps. Example ⬇️ it's a bit overcooked but 🤷‍♂️

@engineeringolf @Bill_Steven37 problem with this idea is very small loft differences in the longer woods and irons and much bigger ones in the wedges. If you had 10% on a driver of 10 degrees the 2 wood would be 11 degrees. A 10% on a 50 degree gap wedge would be 55 degree sand and then a 61 degree lob

@engineeringolf Sounds like me. 3 years in & here's my current WIP bag. My original plan looked more like your outline above (including 2 8i) but somehow settled on this. How much lead tape, hosel drilling/shortening etc? .... yes 😅

A common equipment misdiagnosis I see: The former baseball/hockey player with plenty of speed that has been told to play game improvement irons. Here’s a setup I like for this golfer:

What is your new stat trying to measure? It puts Luis Arráez ahead of Kyle Schwarber. Arráez: .292 AVG + .327 OBP = .619 Schwarber: .240 AVG + .365 OBP = .605 OPS is definitely imperfect but at least it distinguishes extra-base hits from singles. Any stat that can't tell the difference between a single and a home run isn't measuring offensive value very well.

I propose a NEW stat…BAOP! Batting average + OBP The #nerds love OPS but OPS completely disregards batting average and gives to much credit to SLG and that’s not a good way to measure a hitter. If you just look at OPS when comparing Jazz & Bo they’re pretty close but if you look at their BAOP Bo’s is (.631) while Jazz’s BAOP is (.564) or (.67) difference. Bo’s lifetime batting average is (46) points higher which is very significant. Also Jazz has K’d (648) times in (2,109) AB’s while Bo has K’d (639) times in (3,075) AB’s which is also significant. Nothing good happens when you K! I like to black out WAR because it’s a fake stat! #shegone @notgaetti @BobFile @twuench @billdubs @SliderDominate @slider_sinker @ROXSystem @BLocsports @iamrags @CRAIG_LAPINER @hittingguru7 @RVGDag @AMBS_Kernan @SalMarinello

@LouStagner @HarryColtEsq I did some rough math on stats the USGA posted at one point. It graphed pretty close to: Scoring AVG (to par) = HCP X 1.1 + 3 These were scoring averages and not average differentials though.

PRO TIP: (you want to bookmark this one) Use your rangefinder to measure side-to-side distance. I keep this card in my yardage book. It shows how wide my rangefinder's viewfinder is at different distances, letting me measure horizontal yardages. Example 1: I'm 120 yards from the flag but want to aim 5 yards right of the pin. The chart shows half my viewfinder at 120 yards = 7.3 yards. I center the crosshairs on the pin, then aim about 2/3 of the way from center to the edge of my screen (roughly 5 yards). Boom. Now I have an accurate target. Example 2: There's water left off the tee. I want my target line to be 36 yards right of the water. If my typical tee shot is ~250 yards, at that distance, my full viewfinder spans 30.6 yards. I line up the left edge of my viewfinder with the edge of the water and then aim a little more right until the right edge of my viewfinder is 36 yards from the edge of the water. Boom. Now I have my target line. This method makes target selection a lot more accurate. I wish I could say this very clever idea was mine. Shoutout to my good buddy Dr. Brandon Horvath (@UTTurfPath ) who gave me this idea several years ago. As an FYI, not every range finder is the same. Some have slightly different fields of view, which would slightly change the numbers below.
