@dimipan03_02 @Dlee1776 @RioVeradonir Demand for housing is not completely inelastic because obviously housing prices are a consideration for people when they move to a new place. More importantly, supply is not inelastic and heavily influenced by rent control.

The data shows rent control has the opposite effect you’d want (and for explicable reasons). Leftists deny it by focusing on intent over results. In this sense, tariffs are the “rent control” of the New Right. Same foolish dynamic. But before MAGA, tariffs were also leftwing.

An old communist woman handed me a leaflet for the leftist candidate for Paris and when I told her I took issue with his stance on rent control she just looked at me like this

I've been arguing about rent control for over 24 hours now and I'm just realizing how little of the arguments I was given back were actually about rent control, 99% of the replies didn't engage with anything and were just calling me an evil rich libertarian twink

@kalsko8 @BenPWHamilton @TrueSlazac None of them make any substantive points on the policy merits on rent control, just as these two sentences you just wrote make no substantive point on your original flawed argument that rent control is good because it exists

@BenPWHamilton @TrueSlazac Rent control existence proves you're all wrong. You are all confusing "maximalist economic efficiency" with actual policy, including rent control being a foil to other inefficient policies. It's akin to thinking everyone should max econ ef by living in a 20-bed-to-a-room hostel.

@Dlee1776 @RioVeradonir Rent control cannot be fixed to work in favor of anything because price controls simply don‘t work in any domain according to some very basic principles of economics.

@RioVeradonir The difference is that rent control can be fixed to work in the favor of the citizens with other policies. Tariffs are almost impossible to fix in benefit of the citizens because the way our country runs now means they explicitly benefit the elite and powerful.

Ali Larijani’s successor, Hossein Dehghan, holds a PhD in Management. He was one of the students who occupied the US embassy in Tehran. He also commanded the IRGC forces in Lebanon and was among the orchestrators of the 1983 bombing of the US Marine barracks in Beirut. The look on his face says it all.

@theabhayd @javedhassan Considering we‘re down to the third layer in most places, another three weeks of war should be sufficient.

@javedhassan There is no real shortage of leadership in Iran. They’ve built a four-layer succession system, and each tier is carefully and professionally groomed. Remove one layer, and the next is already in place -ready to take the reins without missing a beat.

@anon_opin Donald Trump lied and said he would cap interest rates on credit cards at 10% because high interest credit cards were hurting people but then never did it. If we had a real country that cared about the people instead of the banks and was looking out for them they would do this.

Multiple societies throughout history all came to the conclusion that charging interest on loans was immoral. Punishable by death in some cases. Now we've all done a collective 180 and decided it's the glue holding the world economy together? I think we got it right first time.

@HistoryBoomer I don't know about more important, but it's the point he was making. If you import more people, there will be more crime. Plain and simple.

Total crime is more important than per capita??? You live in a village with 1 murder a year. I live in a city with 300 murders a year. But my city has 8 million people and your village has 20 people. If I were you, I’d be scared. Per capita is more important.
Jon Snow@JonSnow50616798

@HistoryBoomer Bad way of looking at it, because total crime is a more important stat than per capita crime.

@garethdmm @manjustchillpls @kane Obviously you are, only someone with such bad epistemic habits could still consider socialism to be a viable economic policy. And of course, for people with an ounce of critical thinking skills, this is not a change of topic, but precisely one of its root causes.

This is a funny take: If a communist country is not allowed to engage in free trade or capital markets with a capitalist country, communism fails and it’s the capitalist’s fault.
David Adler@davidrkadler

We are laying siege to the island of Cuba, turning off the lights in homes, hospitals, and the country's most critical infrastructure. These are war crimes: lethal, cruel, and criminal acts of collective punishment. It is sociopathy dressed up as foreign policy.

@garethdmm @manjustchillpls @kane They can’t get energy because nobody, not even countries that have been friendly to them in the past, wants to risk US tariffs for the prospect of trading with Cuba. Apparently, they don‘t have anything to offer. After 60+ years of communist utopia!

@BobGlec @manjustchillpls @kane england gets 40% of its calories from imports; blockade england and you get famine but your thing here is that cuba being without power proves socialism doesn't work, my statement is that cuba doesn't have power because of american coercion, I think you've conceded the point

@manjustchillpls @garethdmm @kane Yes, Cuba has mismanaged its economy so severely that they produce nothing of any trade value and are poor. Even China has been telling Cuba to do some free-market reforms but they‘re refusing because they‘re under the spell of a dumb economic ideology
Pablo Andrés Quintero M.@Pabloquinterove

Chinese officials have been perplexed and frustrated at the Cuban leadership’s unwillingness to decisively implement a market-oriented reform programme despite the glaring dysfunction of the status quo. ft.com/content/9ca0a4…

@manjustchillpls @garethdmm @kane Do you know what an embargo is? It‘s not the same as a blockade. Plenty of countries have traded with Cuba in the past, even non-socialist ones (just not the US). They‘re still dirt poor.

@BobGlec @garethdmm @kane The embargo has been on for 60 years you mouth breathing animal. It hasn’t simply been a matter of weeks. And yea it pretty much is blocked off entirely hence why it’s only real supplier for so many years was Venezuela. Again, you don’t know anything about anything.

@manjustchillpls @garethdmm @kane Why don‘t more countries trade with Cuba then? If their economy was so great, then it would be important for other countries to trade with them in spite of tariff threats from the US. Unfortunately, the only thing they produce is cigars

@BobGlec @garethdmm @kane Every country trades dumbass. There’s nothing about communism that excludes trade, so yes an embargo is going to fuck it up. I’m not even a communist and Cubans economy has clear problems, I’m just tried of subhuman animals like you speaking on things you have no idea about.
