MAGA REPUBLICANS... Pay close attention. We Catholic Republicans love our pope, and you can't win elections without us. We already make up about 20% of the Republican Party. You can't afford to lose us. Be very, very, very careful.

Dear friends: I don’t know any Catholic in the United States, from the most traditional to the most progressive, who does not have strong feelings about the comments from President Trump and Vice President Vance about Pope Leo XIV. These include not only President Trump’s initial disrespectful Truth Social post about the Holy Father, but also Vice President Vance’s similarly disrespectful comments about Pope Leo having to be “careful” when he speaks about theology. Let me share some of my own feelings. First of all, it is shocking that a President and Vice President would treat such a good, holy and learned man with such disdain. Imagine telling a man with the Holy Father’s learning and experience (and authority) that he doesn’t understand theology sufficiently. What’s more, imagine attacking him as, ridiculously, “weak on crime” or somehow not understanding foreign policy. Second, I’m edified by Pope Leo’s charitable and courageous response to all this. Charitable because he has not responded in any way other than with charity and respect. As some of you may know, I know the Holy Father slightly, thanks to our being seated together at the Synod for two weeks, and know him to be a kind, reserved, discerning and highly intelligent person. In a word, holy. But courageous too: as we have seen during his time in Algeria and Cameroon, Pope Leo has not shied away from continuing to preach the Gospel, and speaking out in favor of peace (and yes, he understands St. Augustine’s concept of the “just war”) and against, as he said today, tyrants and those who would use God’s name to support violence of bloodshed. So, where will this all end? It’s hard to say. But I would imagine that now that the taboo has been broken, politicians will continue to denigrate him and thus try to persuade people, without saying it explicitly, to think that the Pope’s words do not need to be listened to. But this will be in vain for two reasons. First, Pope Leo is clearly fearless. A few hours after he was elected as pope, I spoke with a fellow Augustinian priest who had known “Bob” for decades. “He’s a great listener, very kind and much loved.” Then he paused. “But he’s no pushover.” But the main reason that the Pope’s words will be heard is less about Robert Prevost’s own many virtues but something else: the Vicar of Christ will be heard because he is preaching the Gospel. As Jesus told his disciples, “Heaven and earth may pass away, but my words will never pass away.” So, in these strange times, fear not.

As a Member of Congress, and as a Catholic, I am appalled by Trump’s recent attacks on Pope Leo XIV, a spiritual leader calling for peace amid the President’s disastrous war of choice in Iran. At a moment that demands humility and moral clarity, His Holiness has reminded the world of the human cost of war and the perils of arrogance and greed. He speaks not as a politician, but as a shepherd of peace, faith, and human dignity. For the warmonger in the White House to respond with insults and self-aggrandizement is a failure of character and a desecration of Christ’s message. Sadly, that is who Trump is. We should be listening to voices of peace and love, not attacking them. The path forward is not paved with ego and hatred, but with justice, compassion, and a lasting peace for all.

For clarification, Paul DID vote in favor of a separate war powers resolution. The confusion is stemming from a separate vote held that same night regarding a war powers resolution intended to limit military action against Iran. Senator Paul was indeed the sole Republican to vote in favor of that specific resolution, which failed in a 47–52. but on Wednesday night, the Senate voted on two Joint Resolutions of Disapproval introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders to halt arms sales to Israel: S.J.Res. 32 (Armored Bulldozers): The effort to block the $295 million sale of Caterpillar D9 armored bulldozers failed in a 40–59 vote. Republicans: Voted unanimously against the resolution, Paul included. My anger toward him is that he claims to be anti-War, yet votes to give Israel military equipment designed to wage just that. For reference, 40 out of 47 Democrats (approximately 85%) voted in favor of the block.

Vance has been rebuked by two popes and the USCCB, who he has also slandered. He doesn’t believe in God or any higher power other than Trump and it is a testament to his psychopathy and narcissism that he’s using his fake Catholicism to shill this book, which is obviously the opening of his 2028 presidential bid.

There is no credible evidence that Iranian authorities “killed at least 42,000 innocent, completely unarmed, protestors” in the riots and protests two months ago. HRANA, a widely cited Iran rights monitor, reported on January 27 that protests had led to 42,324 arrests, not 42,000 killings. The group, which is funded in part by the U.S. government, published on February 23 a ~1,350-page report, it’s most comprehensive account, which documented 7,007 deaths overall — broken down as 6,488 adult protesters, 236 minors, 207 security force members, and 76 non-participants. Iranian authorities have noted 3,117 deaths because of the actions of armed rioters who infiltrated the protests, and about 3,000 arrests.

President Trump is sending more military power to the Middle East as Iran rejects our initial peace offers—setting the escalation trap. We can avoid that trap if we are wise enough not to believe our own hype. Bombing Iranian equipment and killing leaders may produce great hype reels, but if the GWOT taught us anything, it is that tactical success does not equal strategic victory. To avoid a major disaster, we must first define what is truly vital to our national interests and act accordingly—regardless of optics of the daily news cycle. We need the Strait of Hormuz open so oil can flow and stability can return to the energy markets and the Gulf region. These are realistic, achievable goals. They can be reached by significantly reducing our military footprint in the region and lifting sanctions on Iran. We can then tout Iran’s agreement not to build a nuclear weapon as a clear win for the media. The key to avoiding the escalation trap and a disastrous quagmire is restraining Israel by drastically limiting the military aid we provide. Israel cannot sustain this fight without us, and will do everything they can to keep us engaged. We must pursue our own objectives, not theirs. If we try to impose a maximalist outcome on Iran (zero enrichment, etc.) this war will undoubtedly escalate—costing American lives, billions more dollars, and ultimately eroding our global standing. We must learn from our past and recognize when it is time to cut our losses and walk away. In the end, working to restore order will strengthen America far more than any military action ever could.

I’ve officially reached the age where my body requires the same level of maintenance as a vintage muscle car, but with the performance of a 1994 Geo Metro. I used to go out at 10 PM. Now, if I see someone out at 10 PM, I assume they’re fleeing a crime scene or looking for a 24-hour pharmacy. Tell me the exact moment you realized you were "vintage." I’ll start: I got an endorphin rush from a new dish sponge today. 🧽✨️
