So something interesting here… Andrew Rice - 10 years ago - opened my eyes to better spin production by hitting the ball lower in the face on pitch shots (5 yards to 30 yards or so)…not from vertical gearing, but from “cleaner contact.” The theory was that if you hit it lower in the face, the leading edge would have less of a chance to pick up grass clippings, soil, or moisture before striking the ball. But as I was watching Fredrik and Niklas describe some things around Spin Index, they showed Viktor Hovland shots from 2019 to 2023 (Joe Mayo era). In the 2023 shots, Viktor’s impact location was raised as compared to 2019 and much more toward the center of the face, vertically. So, how did Viktor accomplish this? By hitting 10 down and raising his VSP from low 70s to low 80s. Viktor has less debris in his strikes because of his new attack and VSP - not because he tried to hit it lower in the club face. @mfinneygolf Last I checked, we hold the grip not the shaft and the grip doesn’t point where the shaft does on those putters.

Eliminate the hands couple by placing the putter in the “revealer” and the Lab performs like a champ. But alas, once we grip the grip for real, the hands couple comes alive.

Average par 4/5 tee shot is only travelling 288 yards today (tour avg is 292). Interesting, given what a big ball park this is. Valhalla in 2014 was similar: 277 yard tee shot avg (tour avg was 281).

Also, what golf course do you have to hit it short and crooked to play well? Long and straight is the backbone of good golf.

I’m curious what his definition of a “strategic” test is? And how is it different than an execution test?

Here’s the answer.

Which of these two players will have the higher 7iron clubhead speed at impact? Poll in the 2nd part of this thread. Note that both of these players are very good (+2 and +4). One likely has better mechanics for speed generation. These were both good swings for each player.
