@robbskidmore Sure, I'm much more like to listen to the Pumpkins, but as for the 'the test of time' ... who knows, maybe in five years you or I will wake up jonesing for Nevermind (or Bleach) or what a friend used to pronounce "In U-TARE-oh" Time is the true test.

Nirvana’s music does not stand the test of time. But the Smashing Pumpkins does.
So ultimately Billy Corgan won out against Kurt Cobain.
Nirvana was hugely popular but I never listen to it anymore. I find Smashing Pumpkins more musical and listenable. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is a truly great album. Nirvana’s best was probably Unplugged.

I own a lot of Jethro Tull. I own all of Led Zeppelin. I own a lot of Yes. But I only have a "best of" remaster for The Beatles' top-most hits. For a reason. In their moment, they were the greatest Boy Band hit machine anyone had ever seen. But they also suffered colossal audience capture as a result. And it cost them. By 1969 the stress of grinding out catchy Top 40 had doomed the project. They were neither the best musicians, nor the best song-writers. Merely, the best "product" for a radio era which demanded it of them.

@tonytost One thing I never see written about is the gay subtext of Marv's love for Johnny, wanting to get away with him and "let the world take a few spins." He's heartbroken by the rejection, which is why he goes on a bender and shows up at the track when he's not supposed to.

THE KILLING (1956). If I was to list the top 10 movies from my teens that made me fall in love with the movies, this is undoubtedly one of them. I loved it then for its cool toughness & clever precision. I love those qualities now, too, but I also love its sneaky humanity.
