@OferKru @viewie25 @hardwarecanucks “Used”. Won’t find these new any more. I paid £260 for an M1 (8C/8G) MacBook Pro 13” earlier today. If looking today, buy a used M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14” (or 16”) - you can get these for less than a Neo if you know where, they’re 16GB, 512GB SSD and very good XDR mini-LED panel.

@OferKru @viewie25 @hardwarecanucks They are equivalent from a physical hardware perspective and Tahoe has closed the gap as it’s not very good and does make systems feel sluggish (when they shouldn’t). I run Sequoia already, but I’m not sure you can run it on a Neo.

@DeviousPL @viewie25 @hardwarecanucks The argument that win and mac ram are equiv is not true either. I guess you run single software that chews all the ram so swap, compression, and other techniques doesn't yield much of a difference for your work. On other note: you can "downgrade" to Sequoia on the app store :)

@geekedout__ The Neo’s display is pretty decent for 599. Sure, cheap OLEDs will be better for contrast and colour but the Neo still has a bright, 100% sRGB panel which is all most people will realistically want.

@Cartidise @geekedout__ I have the MagicBook Pro 16 and they were all extremely well built for the money. The only letdown was that plastic touchpad.

@OferKru @viewie25 @hardwarecanucks The Neo is for light users and if I was buying a cheap Mac now I’d get a used MacBook Pro 13” M1/M2 not the Neo. You can find them at nearly half the price of the Neo.

@DeviousPL @viewie25 @hardwarecanucks BTW, I also thought the same before I used a mac. Yes the move to 16gb was the right move, 8gb should die on Mac because it won't be good in 5 years when the software becomes more demanding.

@OferKru @viewie25 @hardwarecanucks Well, I have an M1 Max MBP14 and an Air M4 next to me so yes, I do know what I’m talking about. And Tahoe has eliminated a lot of the advantages over Sequoia. You cannot say 8GB unified is like 12GB on a PC, it doesn’t work like that…

If you ever used a Mac, you know that an equivalent Windows and Mac ram capacity doesn't give equivalent experience. On the software front I totally agree with you, they have greatly fallen. Opening tabs in a browser is the dumbest test in the world. All browsers including Chrome sleep idle tabs… no-one is comparing a Neo to a Windows laptop with 8GB RAM…

@DeviousPL @viewie25 @hardwarecanucks Not twice the ram. "12gb" vs 16gb. 1.33x the ram. I've seen Windows laptop with 8gb and typing this on M1 8gb. They are NOT the same. I can run Fusion 360, have 20 tabs open (Firefox) and 2 more light apps before it starts to slow down. Windows with 8gb could never.

@NathanPSI Define better objectively. The Neo is fast but it’s not faster than an Ultra 9 with 32GB RAM.

Update: it rendered perfectly without any issues. It also ran the premiere project with over 2000 clips from a fairly standard external SSD far better than a Windows 11 pc with 32GB of ram, Intel Core Ultra 9 and super fast flash storage. How on earth is this possible.

@OferKru @viewie25 @hardwarecanucks ASUS also has twice the RAM and an OLED DCI-P3 panel. The Mac and Windows comparisons are largely pointless anyway.

@hardwarecanucks Zenbook A14 is a closer comparison for battery life and build quality imo. Often cheaper as well.

And yes, OLED panels burn-in, laptops are more prone to it than tablets or phones because of how they’re used. “Normal use” you can easily cause burn-in, especially power users.

@DeviousPL @VadimYuryev Yes it matters. Burn in as constant use in 1000 days? Sure. The reality is, with normal use you don’t get burn-in. But the other argument for this OLED model is M6 Max, in about 8-9 months
