Zack Polanski has revealed he is working to convince unions to break with Labour, and will give five keynote speeches at union conferences in an effort to erode a key pillar of grassroots support for the party.
And he has already spoken to ten unions, including some affiliated with Labour, whose members work in health, education and culture.
“Since becoming leader I’ve had lots of really fruitful conversations with key union figures,” Polanski told the Times, “and it’s clear that many people in trade unions are feeling really let down by this Labour government and are ready to work more closely with the Green party.”
The Green party has leapfrogged Labour and is now in second place behind Reform in several national polls. One of the first promises Polanski made after becoming leader last year was that the Greens would work to “replace” Keir Starmer’s party, which has fallen to record lows in the polls.
Earlier this month Unite the Union, which has over 1.2 million members, announced it was slashing its financial support for Labour and would consult members about cutting ties entirely.
“Historically, most trade unions have been very strongly linked to the Labour Party but that link is starting to break as it becomes clear the Labour party is no longer the party of working people,” Polanski said.
The party now takes more money from corporations than it does from unions, figures compiled by Democracy for Sale show.

As a result, and for the first time in centuries, the Heads of the Church were prevented from celebrating the Palm Sunday Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This hasty and fundamentally flawed decision, tainted by improper considerations, represents an extreme departure from basic principles of reasonableness, freedom of worship, and respect for the Status Quo.
