In February, I read that by late March, this would be a global calamity. Then I read that it would be a global calamity by April. Now we're in mid April and I still hear that it's probably just a couple/few more weeks before the rubber really hits the road. This story makes no sense. The wonan says she earned less than $22k last year, which means, depending on her filing status, she owed no federal income tax or a few hundred dollars.
And even if all her income had been taxable in the 10 or 12% bracket, no tax on tips would have saved her maybe $1000. That's not nothing, but it's a long way from being enough to pay for cancer treatment and vacations.
