We are calling on @GovernorVA, @ssurovell, and @SpeakerDonScott to condemn this dangerous attack on our democracy. Those claiming to care about fairness and democracy should respect the rule of law instead of threatening to pack the Supreme Court and nullify the Virginia Constitution.

To be fair. The courts should have stepped in and stopped the election if they even thought there was a chance it would get overturned. To let millions be spent and voters waste their time on a void election is actually insane.

Can you imagine that the Democrats are discussing lowering the retirement age of the Va Supreme Court to 54 which would force the entire court to resign (including the three that voted with them). Then stack the court with 7 justices who would have pledged to reverse the redistricting decision. This is your Democrat party. Power hungry thugs. Willing to burn a high court to the ground that dares to disagree with them. They should never have power again.

I still think Virginia Democrats’ best argument is this: our current congressional map took race into consideration. Under the recent SCOTUS ruling, that raises a federal constitutional problem. If so, the state constitutional objections become moot, and Virginia needs a new congressional map.

@shipwreckedcrew If think if they start from scratch they could pass it come the session in spring 2027. We have our next legislative election in fall '27. They could have a special session to pass it again after that and put it on the ballot in spring' 28 to use for fall 28 election.

Correct -- but because of the intervening election requirement, the earliest they could get the 10-1 map back onto the ballot would be Nov. 2028, and it wouldn't apply until 2030.

This is a genuinely unhinged idea. Forcibly removing the entire Virginia Supreme Court, then 'rehearing' the case? Throwing out the EXISTING commission as unconstitutional? What won't they do for power?

The current ages of the 7 Justices on the Virginia Supreme Court are: 70 69 67 64 61 56 54 The idea that the legislature would lower the retirement age to 53 in order to remove them all is just beyond wild. Then they would install 7 new Justices who would have to commit in advance to reversing the prior Court's decision -- that tells you everything you would ever need to know about anyone who would pledge to do that. Three Justices voted in the minority, but you can't exempt them from the retirement because they might object to a corrupt process to remove their colleagues for no reason other than naked partisan politics. This would DESTROY the functional independence of the Virginia Supreme Court, and be a permanent stain on the votes of every Virginia Assembly Democrat who went along with it. It would bring condemnation from Courts and Legislatures all across the country. Virginians need to take a hard look at the people it is electing, and ask whether they have the foundational commitment to the Great American Experiment that has held this country together -- even through a Civil War. In Virginia, of all places.

Sure, if Abigail Spanberger wants to crater her already historically low approval rating into the 30s, go right ahead. Nothing says “rule of law” like court packing the Va Supreme Court for saying NO to your illegal and unconstitutional gerrymandering scheme.
