@BartomeoMatthew @PatrickHeizer First you have to test to make sure the kid actually understands the technique. My kids learned this, and now they get to answer these types of question using wherever method they want.

@PatrickHeizer This is the problem with “common core” math and people who defend it.
You shouldn’t be testing the techniques. You should be testing the outcomes.
Teach the techniques in class, then give the kid 8+9 problem to solve however he wants.

I'm always amused by this post because my dad taught me "make a ten" trick in the 90s. It's not new.

Here’s Dave Ramsey’s advice on buying a house in the year 2026:
- Have 20% for a down payment to avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI)
- Do a 15-year fixed rate loan
- Make sure your monthly payment isn’t more than 1/4th of your take home pay

@AdamKoffler I live in one of the top rated cities to live in the US, with one of the top ranked public universities and plenty of tech and engineering companies.
A modest home is at most $400k in a decent area.
