Today, the civil society representatives on the Pandemic Fund’s Governing Board hosted a CSO Townhall, bringing together over 50 civil society leaders from across regions. Participants shared experiences from their countries. 💡@bonelaethics highlighted their work as a CSO partner for the Fund-supported One Health Disease Surveillance & Response project in Southern Africa. Transforming the global health architecture should also include progressive taxation. Those same countries continue to tax regressively. They do not tax wealth and high incomes enough. It's difficult when you talk about that, you get a fear of capital flight for tax — so again, you need some kind of global collaboration on tax, on more progressive taxation. Last year at the G20, Brazil 🇧🇷 attempted to move the world in this direction by proposing a minimum tax rate for billionaires. Now South Africa 🇿🇦 is leading the G20 and they are moving forward too. President @CyrilRamaphosa has set up what he calls the Extraordinary Committee on International Wealth Inequality, headed by Professor Joseph Stiglitz. I'm proud to be one of its members. And this question of progressive taxation is on the table because do you know: just a 2% tax on the world's 3,000 billionaires could raise $1.7 trillion. That could fund global health, climate adaptation; it could fund education, where these girls are not going to school — so much money for global public goods. #WHS2025 @WorldHealthSmt @ONECampaign
