55 Years After Operation Searchlight: Remembering the l Hindu Genocide in Bangladesh During Operation Searchlight, launched by the Pakistani Army on March 25, 1971, in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), Hindus were systematically targeted as part of a broader genocidal campaign against Bengali nationalists and minorities. Pakistani forces profiled Hindu neighborhoods in Dhaka, such as Rayerbazar and areas around the Ramna Kali Temple, conducting mass killings, rapes, and the destruction of homes and temples; estimates suggest over 25,000 Hindus were killed in the first three months alone. Local collaborators like Jamaat-e-Islami aided the army in these atrocities, segregating Hindus for execution, while events like the Ramna massacre and Chuknagar killings claimed thousands more lives in a deliberate ethnic cleansing effort. 55 years on, we honour the Hindu victims and survivors of the 1971 Bangladesh genocide. Muslim youth attack Holi celebrations in Harrow Holi is a festival of colour, joy and community. Yesterday in Harrow, local Hindu families, including women and children, gathered to celebrate peacefully. Hundreds of devotees attended this Holika Dahan celebrations in Harrow, London, organised by the International Siddhashram Shakti Centre and had prior permission from the council. The event was honored by two serving Mayors, Harrow Council Portfolio Holders, the London Fire Brigade Commander, former Mayors, Councillors, and Labour Group leader, showcasing widespread civic and cross-party support for faith, unity, and community. What should have been a happy occasion was disrupted when a group of Muslim youths reportedly came from a nearby mosque and attacked the event, pushing over speakers and attempting to intimidate those celebrating. After initially leaving, they returned with around 20 others and began attacking members of the gathering. Police were called and arrived approximately an hour later, taking statements from those present. No one celebrating a religious festival in Britain should face intimidation or violence. The right to celebrate our faith peacefully is fundamental and must be protected equally for all communities. We demand the authorities to investigate this incident thoroughly and ensure accountability. Community harmony cannot be built on silence when one group is targeted.
