I wish I had a deep quote I could steal from someone so I can sound smart and stuff.

Suggesting that RJ can ignore the mechanics of the craft is like saying an architect doesn't need to follow physics because they are an artist. Sure, there isn't only one blueprint, but there are fundamental rules like the internal transformation of true character that must be present for a story to be well crafted. You're essentially looking at a comparison between a song with a weird structure and a song that is out of tune..... one is a creative choice whereas the other is a failure of the medium's requirements. RJ's departure from traditional structure in TLJ doesn't excuse RJ skipping 30 years of character development. Using the music analogy, you can skip the chorus but if the notes don't harmonize the song fails. In the same way, if a character's transformation happens entirely offscreen and with no explanation then you aren't looking at a bold new structure..... you're looking at a lack of character development. The flaws mentioned in the OT, like a missed kick or a retcon suich as Vader becoming Lukes father, are surface level production issues or plot adjustments that don't break the mechanical heart of the story. TLJ's issues are foundational, specifically in how they bypass established character logic just to force the plot to happen. Suggesting that over analysis is the problem is just a way to ignore that the TLJ fails to earn it's plot.

@JSPtheSecond @TheUnaButters Music has a blue print too, Intro - Verse - Pre-Chorus - Chorus - Verse - Pre-Chorus - Chorus - Bridge - Chorus - Outro. Plenty of GREAT songs are structured totally different.

That's objectively wrong. It's an error that makes no sense from a character perspective. Luke was willing to die to save his father from the dark, but his first instinct when sensing the darkness in his nephew (who he essentially raised from a child) his first instinct is murder? It doesn’t work. Luke Skywalker, the guy who brought the most evil man in the universe back to the light side of the force, freaked out and almost resorted to murder because his emo nephew had the potential to turn to the dark side. Worst of all, RJ didn't put in any work and didn't do any heavy lifting to show how Luke could go from where we left him in RotJ (hopeful, wanting to and having redeemed his father, throwing down his lightsaber) to wanting to kill his nephew then become a cynical hermit. He skipped 30 years of character development, making Luke a completely different character altogether. RJ, and fans of this film, objectively misunderstand Luke's character, his arc, and what an arc is altogether

@JSPtheSecond @SCShipyards It was neither. Rian Johnson seems like the only one at Disney who ever understood the OT. He didn't deconstruct the character at all. He wrote a love letter to it.

Sean W. Malone | That’s just, like, your opinion.
It's always kinda frustrating knowing that I will go on podcasts with 1,000 viewers/listeners having done more comprehensive prep than national political figures do for debates and campaign speeches.

AOC says "rivers were on fire" because of corporations like Deloitte "pouring chemicals" into waterways. Deloitte is an accounting, consulting, and tax services firm. No idea what she's talking about.

It is bad. And everything you mentioned from the OT is actually not bad or is nowhere close to as bad as, say, Luke's portrayal (fans of TLJ do not understand Lukes character, his arc, or what an arc is in general). The OT has flaws, sure, but they are dwarfed by the ST, especially TLJ. Stop suggesting craftsmanship in storytelling is just subjective, it's not

@TheUnaButters Lukes phantom kick in ROTJ ,Vader Obi duels choreography from ANH, Vader becoming Lukes father in whatever draft of ESB it was , Leia becoming Lukes sister last minute and crammed into some BS Dagobah POV scene was all good though? They all have flaws. Doesnt make it bad

@as_per_ushe @kane I hate to be pedantic but that's not necessarily true. Krotopkin and Bakunin were both communists. Then there are anarchists like Molinari, Spooner, and Warren who were either pro capitalist or had pro capitalist leanings.

@SCShipyards Luke hero journey in the films is consistent with the EU : all you did not get was his heart break over Mara , getting kicked out of the Republic government , a vengeance mission, but he still ends up in seclusion.

@Ash1138 @SCShipyards He either means it being subversive or that Luke's portrayal was a complete 180 from Luke's established character in the OT. Either way, he's correct. It was subversive, but that doesn't make it good, obviously, and the movie deconstructed Lukes character from the OT.

@MikeJCzapla @HannahDCox No, I don't think that is true. I am defining capitalism as private ownership of the means of production. I am defining socialism as worker/collective/state ownership of the means of production

Anti-capitalists always act like they’re on some sort of moral crusade when at the end of the day what they’re really after is slaves - they just haven’t admitted it to themselves.

Then go make art and be in your garden. Nobody is stopping you. If you say "but then how will I pay rent and eat!", then your actual complaint is you want stuff to be handed to you for free. Which means *others* have to work to provide for you, and not make art or be in gardens.

@HannahDCox Defining is the problem. It depends entirely on POV. People get attached to words and those people are then controlled. Capitalists in general have very little idea about freedom or the market, they just hate socialism. That's the identifying factor. Same with socialists.

I attended the same school as the alleged WHCA shooter — @DominguezHills. A decade before him & different department. But same institution. Fall 2013. Poly sci paper arguing America was uniquely tolerant because of federalism, assimilation, and ordered liberty. The professor called it a “rant” and gave me a 50. I was furious and had no recourse. A sympathetic faculty member told me so. The grade wasn’t one professor — it was the institution itself. Next assignment: write how Obamacare would lower medical costs. I knew it wouldn’t. I wrote it anyway. Very next semester I changed my major to economics and transferred to @CSULB. At least econ had to deal with incentives, trade-offs, and reality. But the political science department there was worse. I learned quickly that academia is not interested in teaching you how to think, instead they teach you what to think.
Will Ricciardella@WillRicci

The WHCA alleged shooter wasn’t some nut job lurking on the fringes of society, forgotten by the system. He was well-educated, credentialed, employed, and institutionally formed. That’s what makes this so disturbing. At first glance, this doesn’t look like a breakdown of the system, it looks more like a product of it. Academia, media, and politics helped build the moral permission structure. Let that sink in.

Rian Johnson didn’t want to make a Star Wars movie, he wanted to make a Rian Johnson movie. That’s great. People enjoy “Knives Out.” But the guy you want on Star Wars is a talented filmmaker with a strong vision who has loved Star Wars since he was a kid in the exact way that the most devoted fans love Star Wars. You need a Peter Jackson. I can’t believe there isn’t a guy like that.

Mark Hamill on what he told Last Jedi director Rian Johnson after reading the script: "I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you've made for this character. Now, having said that, I have gotten it off my chest, and my job now is to take what you've created and do my best to realize your vision." If the actor who played Luke for 40 years didn't recognize him, should the film have been rewritten?

A story (or in this context a film) taken as a whole, cannot be "great" if it isn't overwhelmingly great in the details. Plenty of series and movies can be "good" and worth watching over and over if they only have a fun plot and decent technical craft, but the acting is weak; or if the acting is incredible, but the direction and editing aren't the best; or if the special effects are insane but the story is lackluster, etc. But to be a truly "great" film, it must be firing on all cylinders. Craftsmanship wise it isn't an absolutely gorgeous movie or firing on all cylinders. Sure, the visuals and special effects are good but the writing is terrible. The character development is bad. And the choreography in the throne room is mediocre.
