Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears This situation is the Patrick Mahomes/ Andy Reid with a playoff ready roster dynamic. Another example is Big Ben and the Steelers, where a first-round quarterback was set up for success at an extreme level. I was early on Mahomes because I understood that what he did well (out of structure wizard) paired perfectly with what Reid would provide (create margin with what he did in structure). I bought Mahomes rookie cards while he was sitting his rookie season just like I did with Aaron Rodgers when he was young, hit a 50-1 MVP ticket that I bought when the market opened that offseason, etc, because I understood the ceiling case. It’s very rare when things line up like this, but I bet on it every time that it happens. Caleb Williams is more talented than Patrick Mahomes. Williams has a long way to go to be better than Mahomes, but the combination of things this guy can do, Mahomes, Allen, Rodgers are the only guys I’d put in that list, and Williams has more raw speed and evasion abilities than all of them. This is not a new thought, I wrote about the Bears at length virtually every week this season because what this kid can potentially become, was the most interesting thing in the league this season. I thought Ben Johnson was a very good hire, but the way in which he rolled out his offense this season genuinely exceeded my expectations. He had a quote where he said he was glad the team he a bye early in the year because it would give him a chance to evaluate everything early, is one of the most situation aware things I’ve ever heard a coach say. There were a few calls throughout the year where it was a goal to go situation that given the Bears OL and run game, they were, to me, very obvious run situations, yet Johnson would call passes in several of them, in my opinion, because he was developing Caleb because he knows that if Williams can get to a point where he masters the offense and plays more consistently, this guy can carry games. Most of the offline throws I saw from Caleb Williams this year were about being a hair off with timing. Some of them that looked very offline, again as someone that has watched an obscene amount of football the last decade, if you watched every Mahomes throw over the course of a season, he blows way more layups than you realize. Some of them with Williams were definitely bad, but I’ve seen Allen, Mahomes, Stafford miss throws they should hit by a lot. Rodgers doesn’t really miss throws, he’s the exception for guys that can move, but all the other ones, I can think of half a dozen throws off the top of my head where Mahomes has thrown a smoke route five yards short into the ground. And the bottom line is, when was the last time you saw a quarterback that made breathtaking throws look routine, have accuracy issues long term? I cannot think of one, so I’m comfortable betting on that aspect of things getting tightened up with the Williams/ Johnson marriage sooner than later. The ceiling case is Williams gets to a point where he’s more consistent and has mastery of the offense, and plays weapons free all the time within the structure of the offense. That is essentially the path of Mahomes, and again while there is a long way to go to reach those heights, it’s on the table here. Now, the late game heroics are interesting because they are both not sustainable from a volume standpoint, but guys like this do not make the plays they do by accident, so it’s not a fluke, either. So, on that front, I still expect that Caleb Williams will storm down the field late in games and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat throughout his career, just not at the clip he did last season in terms of raw volume. That said, I do think the Bears offense will be more consistent, and ultimately better right from the jump next season, barring injuries. So, I expect that to counteract some of the one score game regression. Additionally, Chicago was down their two top corners for most of the season. When they were back, the defense was significantly better. You throw a Maxx Crosby on this team, with those corners, there is a world where the Bears have the league’s highest scoring offense next season, with a top 10 defense. Injuries are a thing that changes seasons in the NFL, but if the Bears can add another difference making pass catcher, I think we see a monster year out of them in at least one of the next three seasons.

NFL Observations, Plus Predictions Heading into Next Season for Every Team - The 2025 campaign will be the peak of the Drake Maye Patriots. Nice player, I think he and Mike Vrabel’s elevated defense will be in the playoff mix regularly, but this was the top. More on Maye, NE and their schedule in the first comment. - Give me Caleb Williams over Maye going forward to the point it’s a non-decision for me. The Bears are 3-5 tighter throws a game and a high-end pass rusher away from being a monster. I think they win a Super Bowl within the next three years, and that Williams enters next season as a perennial MVP factor with a ceiling of historically relevant quarterback. More on Williams and the Bears in the second comment. - Justin Herbert with Mike McDaniel is one of, if not the most interesting new coach/ QB dynamics in the league this year. Give me Herbert to outproduce Maye in 2026, and when I make my first pass at Super Bowl matchup predictions, I could see LAC being the team I spend the most time on. - The Ravens enter the 2026 season with more dangerous play callers than they had in 2025. What happens with their roster this offseason, is of great interest. - Hiring John Harbaugh was a good decision by New York’s front office, as the entire operation needed an overhaul, but the smart organization (Baltimore) moved on from Harbaugh while Lamar Jackson still has the team in their Super Bowl window. The Eagles moving on from Andy Reid is the only similar circumstance I can recall that worked out for both teams, and I could not be more underwhelmed with the Giants’ coordinator hires. - Give me Jaxson Dart over Tyler Shough from a raw ceiling perspective, but when you factor in availability long term, it’s a real decision. That said, I thought Kellen Moore created more margin, in more games than I was expecting and Shough could be a Kirk Cousins level player. If you’ve given me pushback on not being in love with Shough, that compliment (and it is a compliment) is exactly why I’m not head over heels: good, better than expected even, but is that the kind of guy you want to marry? I’m not running out looking for rings, currently. - J.J. McCarthy was a bit horrifying over his first six starts, but he was not nearly as bad as public perception in his final four. I spoke about these three young quarterbacks in a row on purpose. - I would not be even mildly surprised if Kyler Murray stays in Arizona given the coach they hired (which given their situation was an excellent dart throw). However, if Arizona moves on from Murray, I would absolutely love to see what he’d look like in that Minnesota environment or in Atlanta. I’m hoping Murray ends up in one of those three destinations. - Speaking of the Falcons, they have the best non-quarterback roster in the league’s worst division. Their skill group and offensive line being good were no surprise, but their defense, while not exactly consistent, had some very impressive spike games. The James Pierce situation is obviously not good, and we’ll leave that one at that, but few groups in the league exceeded my expectations more than the Falcons defense in 2025. - The Eagles have had one of the better front offices in football this entire century. However, I don’t think all of their issues on offense were solely on their play caller (who was bad, to be clear). Both Saquon Barkley and A.J. Brown looked notably less explosive throughout the year, and worse the Eagles’ offensive line was the least reliable it’s been in a long time. Barkley came off monster volume in 2024, Brown may have just been checked out, and Philly dealt with OL injuries, so there are paths to bounce backs across the board. If there’s a front office in the league that can fix things, its this one, but all of that is on my radar heading into next season. - The Commanders still have a below average roster and I said before last season started: give me Caleb Williams over Jayden Daniels. However, the only other NFC quarterback I’d rather have than Daniels entering next year is Matthew Stafford and Washington being bad this year is sneakily something they needed long term, as they need more difference makers on this team. - Speaking of Stafford, I watch every game and that’s why I was firmly on team Stafford for MVP. It was not really a decision for me, and a lot of people that cover the NFL full time over counted things they saw in primetime in the MVP race, and we’ll leave it at that. Me actually seeing every game is also why I’d say that while Puka Nacua is radically better than I thought he was going to be, and a genuinely very good player, he’s not doing what he’s doing in most NFL cities. McVay’s ability to scheme him open looks, Stafford’s ability to hit him on both timing routes (things of beauty for football connoisseurs) and giving him zero window opportunities, it’s the perfect environment for the ultra-reliable Nacua. - Dak Prescott, Jordan Love and Brock Purdy are a cluster for me, and I think we’ve already seen the ceiling for all three of their teams under their command. You might be surprised by me saying that Purdy’s 49ers are the one of this group that I’m the least sure I’m right about. Purdy has the occasional stinker where he looks like a guy taken with the last pick in the draft on a few throws, but he’s been much better than most realize for years. Plus, he has the talent elevator coach and an organization that has built two monster rosters this century. I’m not ready to bury San Francisco as a championship contender yet, the other two though… - I did not think Green Bay was a Micah Parsons away from being a monster when they made that deal last season. Now that he’s set to miss time heading into next year, that Green Bay can’t reload through the draft given that trade and that the Packers are going to have to start paying all these nice, young players they’ve drafted over the last few years, I think the Jordan Love Packers’ best days are already behind them. Similar to the Patriots, good coach, good quarterback, so they’ll be in the mix, but I don’t think this team is ever winning the whole thing. - If I ran the Dallas Cowboys I would trade Dak Prescott and reset, because this team is the definition of a stuck in the middle team in its current state. Their parallel is the Matt Ryan Falcons, they had a stretch where they had a very good roster and were genuinely dangerous, but that’s over and this is now what they are. - Speaking of resets, I absolutely loved the two big trades the Jets made last year. They were very situationally aware, took courage to make and they have put themselves in a very unique position to rebuild, where they have a good-looking young OL and a primary receiver in Garrett Wilson as building blocks. They will be bad this year, but ideally bad enough to get the exact quarterback they want in the 2027 draft. Long-term, I’m far more interested in the direction the Jets are headed than consensus. - I said this the day he was hired, I don’t expect Jeff Hafley to survive his contract. Hafley was a nice play caller in Green Bay, but his defense was filled with first and second round talent. He will not have that luxury in Miami, and nothing about this move made any sense to me given the state of the organization, which is they are a day 1 rebuild. - Joe Burrow is in a similar position as Andrew Luck was with the Colts, and that press conference where he mentioned the notion of retirement, was not a nothing burger for me. I love Burrow so I hope he doesn’t follow a similar path as Luck, but given the situation he’s in, I’d genuinely get it. - Entering the 2026 season, few teams are as entirely reliant on their quarterback as former LSU standouts Burrow and Jayden Daniels, except the Buffalo Bills. Personally, I would have fired Sean McDermott after that Chiefs playoff games years ago where a defensive call was made that enabled Travis Kelce to be carried up the seam with no over the top help in that situation. McDermott did a very good job stabilizing the Bills organization, and if, say, the Jets hired him next offseason I’d immediately get the logic, but similar to Dan Quinn in Washington, these kinds of guys are not giving you a strategic edge against McVay, Reid, Shanahan, etc. They are the Kirk Cousins of NFL coaches, good, yes, but are they good enough? Not for me. That said, how all that was handled, yikes. - If Josh Allen sat out next season, once again the Buffalo Bills would be the Curtis Painter Colts: they would be the worst team in the league without Allen, just like that Colts team was without Peyton Manning. - Give me Mike Tomlin over Mike McCarthy 100 out of 100 times. It seems like consensus here is that Pittsburgh made a parallel move, where they will once again win 8-10 games. I’ll take the under on that with this roster, especially if Rodgers doesn’t come back. That said, I go out of my way to be very unbiased and not lean into this kind of thing, but that press conference McCarthy had, I am actually rooting for him. - Todd Monken deserved a shot to be a head coach, but this reminds me a lot of Vic Fangio getting his shot (though, give me Fangio as a DC over Monken as an OC any day). Monken is not in a very good position to succeed, as it would not surprise me if Shedeur Sanders beat out the recent version of Deshaun Watson, and how I have framed Sanders rookie season is good for a fifth-round pick. That’s like saying good for a fast-food cheeseburger that isn’t from In-N-Out. - I have not dug into draft prospects at all yet, so the only thing I can say about the Raiders offense is that I am genuinely looking forward to the dynamic created for Brock Bowers and Ashton Jeanty as a duo by a real play caller. I expect I’ll be overweight on Jeanty next year. That said, the big one for me here is that Vegas should trade Maxx Crosby, ideally to Chicago. He’s an excellent player, on an otherwise atrocious defense. He’s the one piece the Raiders have to stack young players, so I hope they do it, both for them and for Crosby, who I’d absolutely love to see play for a contender. - Everything I said about New England in that first statement, is how I feel about Denver with the exception that Drake Maye is better than Bo Nix. That said, the Broncos would have been in the Super Bowl if Nix didn’t go down. - Jared Goff belongs in that cluster with Dak, Love, Purdy as Goff has been better than many give him credit for over his career. Having said that, I went into last season thinking that Lions team had already peaked, and they gave me no reason to think otherwise in that division. - Let’s throw Baker Mayfield in there too, as the Buccaneers are the very definition of a team stuck in the middle because of what Mayfield has become as a quarterback (which, to be clear, means this is a bad team without good QB play). - Carolina has a good coach, but that is a roster with more question marks than answers. If there is one team I’d pick to go from first to worst in their division, it would be the Carolina Panthers, who coincidentally I picked to win the South before the season, this year. - I despised the Robert Salen hire in Tennessee and there was not a single moment during Brian Daboll’s tenure in New York while he was calling plays that I thought he created any margin. I thought Cam Ward had some fringe top 10 QB in the league potential coming into last year’s draft, but he’s going to have to overcome environment to get there, like Deshaun Watson did in Houston. Historically when I like a QB and they fail, it’s related to environment, and that has been flagged for Ward. - The Colts trade for Sauce Gardner was one of the most situationally inept moves I’ve ever seen an NFL team make. Not only is Indianapolis going nowhere, but that trade buried them long term. Their best-case scenario next season is high end defense, paired with ball control offense with the occasional spike against bad teams. I feel bad for Shane Steichen, who I think is a good coach. - C.J. Stroud’s rookie season stunned me, as who he’s been the past two years is much more in line with what I was expecting, which was league average starter that gives me limited enthusiasm. While the defense has been very good, led by a pass rush that I absolutely love, it’s hard for me to call DeMeco Ryans a plus coach given Stroud’s regression. Some of that is roster (OL) related, but some of it is Houston creates no strategic margin on offense. While that isn’t on Ryan directly, as he’s a defense guy, I think it matters. - I’m in a weird place with Jacksonville. One of the core reasons I don’t really care about performance evaluation stats in football is players are so reliant on their teammates that production numbers lack a ton of context. A big reason I do what I do is because I find what data misses, and there are still big holes in football. I laid all that out because some production is unsustainable, but that is not how I viewed Lawrence’s rise. I also don’t exactly view the Jaguars as a juggernaut roster, making Jacksonville one of the team’s I have the least strong stance on going into next year. - Another is Seattle. I got a lot of things right this year, but the Seahawks were not one of them. A lot of that was coaching, as Seattle’s pass rush is one with several good players that was turned into a genuine wrecking ball with the approach of their coaching staff. That group exceeded my expectations. So did Sam Darnold. I liked him coming out but understood the environment he was heading into in NY, so when Minnesota took a shot on him, I loved it, as I would also make a habit of taking stabs at failed first round picks whose failure could be reasoned as driven by environment. I was not expecting him to blow up like he did there, and while I was expecting him to be fine in Seattle, I was not expecting him to do what he did with this roster. Do they duplicate it? I have not been a doubter since that comeback win against the Rams in the regular season. I do this kind of thing every year internally to essentially set a baseline heading into the offseason, where I will update stances as rosters change and the schedule comes out. This is the first time I’ve put it out into the open. Enjoy the offseason.
