What are vegans trying to achieve?
It'd be better for animal welfare to buy small amounts of meat & dairy from high welfare farms. The impact on the market will reduce factory farming more effectively than being vegan.
We could eliminate factory farming within a generation with a sustained focus on this achievable goal.

I will think about if this is defensible but my initial thought is that I don't support illegal migrant labor as such, but think it's better than the relevant alternative.

IMO, Yglesias here is just hinting at the importance of immigration, generally, to the current way of life in the US, which is hard to square with many widely held beliefs
