@sam_cannas @initjean @theo I was testing out different models and finally got to Parakeet. It’s incredible. I wonder what other hidden gems I am missing for specialized uses…

@initjean @theo Totally agree with LLM models, no way you're running anything competent that's not extremely specialized Tho for non-LLM models, for example speech to text, there are really nice models like Parakeet you can straight up run locally

@NoCommas Thank you so much for looking into this and writing it up. I had been fooled by this and would have spent even more time reading about and analyzing the harness.

@jamandabop @morallawwithin I find the humor in pointing out a slight problem in the “translation” of the abstract mathematical representation into the most common interpretative framework to make the abstract idea more legible. In this case, this problem is trivial to patch and unlikely to confuse. Amusing

I can never predict what jokes will land with the students. Today I was talking about the prisoners’ dilemma and I wrote a -8 in the box and said “So that’s -8 years not in prison…” and that KILLED it

@rucibear @morallawwithin @Philip_Goff You are proposing that, from an individual perspective, buying animal products not factory farmed could be more detrimental to factory farms than being vegan? Naively, this seems really implausible. What mechanism do you have it mind?

@morallawwithin @Philip_Goff this is still dependent on the empirical question of market impact. strong credence that buying from non-factory farms has greater negative market impact on factory farms than going vegan should merit consideration

What are vegans trying to achieve? It'd be better for animal welfare to buy small amounts of meat & dairy from high welfare farms. The impact on the market will reduce factory farming more effectively than being vegan. We could eliminate factory farming within a generation with a sustained focus on this achievable goal. ciwf.org.uk

@min_coal @CredenceClearoj @SolidariteCivil @lionel_trolling It has to be stressed that the Soviets collaborated with Hitler to enable the war and shielded the Nazi war machine through vital support. Prevented the Polish from protracting the war which likely might have caused French and British to launch an active offensive, preventing WW2

@Brien_Jackson @samitseems @lionel_trolling Yeah, I don’t know what this is about the topic on X but I feel like it is pretty key to any analysis to point out the that Soviets allied with nazis, cut short the war in Poland, and prevented the French and British from coming to the defense…

@samitseems @lionel_trolling I mean...the U.S. not only played a larger role in defeating the Nazis because of our robust and dynamic economic capacity and competent logistics, we also didn't stupid aid and enable Hitler in the 5 years before tne war lol

Hey, @Clif_Clemotte and @PAHoyeck, do philosophy undergrads in courses on Logic still have to read this, or is it just weird people like me on the sole merit that the dude wrote a bunch of famous hymns?

@nominalthoughts I’d appreciate your opinion on this: how crucial for Argentina do you think was the currency swap agreement with the US? Any layman-appropriate reading on this you could recommend?

@olivertraldi @GovTimWalz Reasonable background belief: ICE is not doing regular law enforcement but is used to enact vengeance on political opponents, intentionally stoke conflict with hope of violent confrontations. Then it is perfectly consistent, due to asymmetry. Not if it's a battle of "two sides".

@No5mallf3at @TimHenke9 Have you seen Shalizi's article on this? I think he tries to explain quite extensively something along the lines of what you seem to be hinting at. I think most would find it very interesting even if they disagree with his reasoning: bactra.org/weblog/523.html

@TimHenke9 This is why I wish I knew math better, because I swear there’s some kind of circularity in the method of IQ. Like the whole idea of calibrating the test to an average and then saying it represents intelligence, where did you learn what intelligence was?

@sentientism @dioscuri There are some other topics like that but it is a very small subset of all topics (if that even makes sense)! I always wondered if there is some way to capture what it is, across all these diverse matters, that has this effect even on “otherwise brilliant minds” as you put it.

@theramblingfool @kthomas96953034 @mattyglesias More generally, I believe it would be best to greatly expand legal pathways for migrant laborers, along with the protections. But: a) my opinion is not relevant/does not matter here b) such a proposal is just completely politically infeasible right now (the voters reject it)

@theramblingfool @kthomas96953034 @mattyglesias Hmm, you are making me rethink my tweet. Naively, I would endorse both claims with some qualification. I will think about if this is defensible but my initial thought is that I don't support illegal migrant labor as such, but think it's better than the relevant alternative.

@kthomas96953034 @theramblingfool @mattyglesias I agree people sometimes seem to make such an argument (it’s jarring) but I don’t think this is such a case. IMO, Yglesias here is just hinting at the importance of immigration, generally, to the current way of life in the US, which is hard to square with many widely held beliefs

@theramblingfool @mattyglesias I find it quite humorous that the left has to resort to what's essentially pro-slavery arguments to defend their stance on immigration. Sounds an awful lot like "who's going to pick our cotton if we abolish slavery?"
