@ScottyTMJ2 The amount of “big 6” fans I seen getting filled in in the holte over the years is plenty. “play silly games…” and all that.

These "I don't condone the violence" shouts are everything wrong with modern day football. If I sit in the Stretford End, the Holte End, The Gallowgate, The Kop etc and jump up celebrating a last minute winner for Everton I would fully expect to get filled in. Football is tribal

@Euroboynextdoor @poperespecter1 I’m in the same boat with how a standard day looks, just figuring out how to best observe Lent. Would you suggest only one meal a day maybe?

Reminder: Ash Wednesday is a mandatory fast day for Catholics. This means 1 meal, 2 snacks and no meat.

@eick74 @TheMuppetPastor I converted to Catholicism from Church of England. We were told in RCIA we abstain from all meat, except fish, every Friday. It’s where the tradition of fish and chips supper on a Friday in the UK comes from. My personal Lenten is to only have one meal a day and daily rosary.

I agree that fasting is biblical and that Protestants shouldn’t mock spiritual discipline. Jesus clearly says “when you fast,” not “if.” And corporate fasts are in Scripture (Joel 2:15). That said, I do have a genuine question for my Catholic friends: When we talk about “Lenten fasting,” are Catholics practicing meaningful food restriction, or primarily abstaining from meat on Fridays and giving up something like sweets? And why did the discipline of Friday abstinence shift in 1966 from year-round to primarily Lent? Was that considered a doctrinal change or a pastoral adjustment? I’m not trying to score points - I’m honestly trying to understand the distinction between: • Food fasting • Abstinence from certain foods • Voluntary self-denial Is giving up desserts considered true fasting, or symbolic discipline? For what it’s worth, after growing up Catholic (baptized and confirmed), the first time I was ever asked to fast was in a Baptist church - so this isn’t tribal for me. I’m genuinely interested in how the Church defines fasting today compared to Scripture.

I often cringe at many posts as Lent approaches. Ok, I get it. The Bible doesn’t say you need to fast 40 days to celebrate Lent, nor does it use the word “lent”. Also yes, some people boast about the ashes in their foreheads and the thing they’re fasting so much that it becomes a performance, not a serious fast for God. But let’s not be obtuse here. The Bible DOES tell us we are dust and to dust we shall return. “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”” Genesis 3:19 ESV Also, Jesus Himself assumed we would fast, saying “when” you fast. “But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,” Matthew 6:17 ESV Jesus expects us to fast; He simply doesn’t want us to boast about it. Jesus also set the example for us by fasting 40 days. “And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry.” Luke 4:1-2 ESV Most Protestants have never fasted at all, to our shame. We look terrible pointing fingers at Catholics who actually are fasting. (Meanwhile Orthodox fast half the year). Also, it’s not hypocritical to call for a corporate fast of the faithful. “Blow the trumpet in Zion; consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly;” Joel 2:15 ESV The prophet Joel begged Israel to come together for a fast and to ask God for mercy. Yes, social media does make it acceptable to boast about what we give up for lent. Ashes on foreheads and endless posts about our sacrifices can certainly seem hypocritical and in opposition to Jesus’ humble command. Catholics need to ensure that they aren’t making themselves the star instead of Jesus. But Protestants also need to understand that fasting is a very good thing, and the Bible commands us to do. Jesus set the example, and following a 40 day fast to prepare for Easter is a great way to prepare our hearts. This tradition is biblical and sound, and it’s to our spiritual deprivation to mock it. Should we despise tradition so much that we ridicule sound biblical discipline? Tradition is a very good thing when we can understand the biblical reasoning for it. Tradition is how many early church teachings were preserved. Indeed, many were intentionally NOT added to the Bible to keep them safe from Rome. The early church had secrets only meant for the faithful in spoken word. Early church liturgy asks non members to depart at certain points, so they couldn’t see ceremonies like this Eucharist. But the secrets were still biblically based, holy, and in agreement with Christ.

I used to be very religious, I met my wife at the university Catholic society. We always talked about going to Rome and the Vatican and we finally went last year, the sheer wealth on display has completely destroyed my faith. I now work on Sundays to avoid going to mass

@jimivylan @AVFCOfficial Unfortunately, you have me at a loss, as failing to receive communion in front of you I can’t necessarily prove it. Although I think you misjudged my initial comment for one of Sectarianism. It wasn’t. I was just wondering if the Admin would add Shrove Tuesday to their post.
