@AHiley88626 @ModernNavy @CityAM George Osbourne as referenced in the tweet was the former Conservative Chancellor. The Tories gutted defence for the country under austerity, Labour has committed to spending more, these things take time.

Russia’s defence spend as a share of GDP far outpaced the UK, and since its invasion of Crimea in 2014, the US too. In total spend, Russia has been beating the UK on defence ever since George Osborne's austerity measures that hit the military hard @CityAM cityam.com/charts-uk-defe…

@jamelliog @reformparty_uk Taxation is much higher now than it was when you were paying tax, a large part of that is due to the cost of the triple lock. The state pension is the majority of all benefits and welfare spending in the budget, by a large margin. Increasing pension above wages is unsustainable.

Before I was an MP, I worked on the current series of polymer banknotes at the Bank of England. So I know how decisions about our currency are made, and why they matter. Nigel Farage clearly doesn’t. What he conveniently ignores is that central banks regularly issue new banknote series. It’s how they stay ahead of counterfeiters and keep our currency secure. It’s technical. It’s essential. And it’s completely routine. So why is he manufacturing outrage? Because Farage and Reform UK have spent months attacking the Bank of England itself. They’ve demanded the Bank halt quantitative tightening. 💷 They’ve pushed to stop interest being paid on central bank reserves, which would completely destroy monetary policy transmission. ⚠️ And Farage has even suggested replacing the Governor with someone aligned to his agenda. Let’s be clear: Politicians leaning on central banks is how you spook markets and undermine confidence in the economy. Bank of England independence, brought in by the last Labour government, exists for a reason. To keep markets and household finances stable. I back the Bank to keep our currency secure, not to be dragged into political point-scoring. So if Farage spent half as much time understanding how the Bank works as he does attacking it, we’d hear a lot less of this nonsense. ❌
Nigel Farage MP@Nigel_Farage

The Bank of England is replacing Winston Churchill with a picture of a beaver on our bank notes. This is the definition of woke.

@RedWallPleb @mattfletcher909 @PolitlcsUK I think you're misunderstanding. Create larger police authorities for serious crimes, should have more resources and more consistent handling of these cases. Delegate local policing to smaller local forces who have a better idea of their local area for the lesser crimes. L

🚨 SUMMARY: The Government's reforms to policing - Facial recognition technology will be rolled out across England and Wales from next year - The 43 police forces will be cut to around 12 "mega forces" who will only focus on major crime - "Local Policing Areas" will be included in these forces in each town, city or borough who will focus only on local crime, such as shoplifting or anti-social behaviour - A British FBI will be established, called the National Police Service, to bring together national policing functions to tackle fraud, terrorism and organised crime, with Regional Crime Hubs built into its structure - All police officers must hold a "Licence to Practice" to remain in the force to ensure they're trained to tackle emerging crimes, with those who fail removed from duty - Police will be required to reach serious incidents within 15 minutes in cities and 20 minutes in rural areas, and answer 999 calls within 10 seconds - A National Public Order Commander will be appointed in the NPS to coordinate responses to riots - A new national centre called "Police AI" will roll out AI across all police forces from April to cut bureaucracy and speed up investigations - A new national forensics service will be created to end "postcode lotteries" in forensic capability - Non-crime hate incidents will be abolished and replaced with a new framework so police spend less time "policing" tweets - Police governance will transfer to directly elected mayors or Policing and Crime Boards made up of council leaders

@RedWallPleb @mattfletcher909 @PolitlcsUK Wrong. Lookup "Neighbourhood Policing". They are very effective at bridging the gap between disadvantaged communities where crime is high and the police force.

This is all part of the destruction of ENGLAND. The county councils being merged is another part. They are getting rid of the traditional shires and county structure. Parish councils and therefore direct rule from the local people is being eliminated. Police accountability is being denied with this type of systemic change

Merging police forces strikes me as a bad idea. Let me explain why. I once attended a two-day workshop on the work of Nobel Prize winning economist Elinor Ostrom. We read maybe 7-8 papers by her. One of the papers we read looked at police forces and whether the theoretical benefits of consolidation (economies of scale) were found in practice. Big organisations have a unique ability to add layers of crud and bureaucracy. Economies of scale are often undermined by new layers of process and approval. But there’s also reasons to think that centralisation creates new problems. First, policing relies on local knowledge, but consolidation typically means decision-making shifts away from people who know their beat best. Second, there’s less responsiveness and accountability. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the Met seems to have the biggest problems with misconduct. And the problem isn’t just abuse, it’s also the risk that local priorities are ignored. Think about bike theft. The best response to it in the capital came from the City of London police not the Met. I don’t have the full details of the Govt’s plans (and maybe plans for “local police areas” focused on ‘everyday crimes’) will square the circle. But one of history’s finest economists suggests there are reasons to be sceptical.
Politics UK@PolitlcsUK

🚨 SUMMARY: The major policing reforms set to be outlined by the Home Secretary next week: - The number of police forces in England and Wales will be cut from 43 to around 12 "mega forces" from 2034 - These forces would focus only on serious and organised crime, major incidents and complex cases such as murder and drug offences - Everyday crimes like shoplifting, phone theft and street-level drug dealing would be handled by new "Local Policing Areas" in every borough, town and city, with a renewed focus on neighbourhood policing
