A mate of mine who's a joiner priced a job up to supply and fit a full house of doors, told customers 50 % up front to cover materials. The rest on completion. Customers went to the Halifax bank in town today. Bank wouldn't transfer payment . Stating this could be fraud

@JoeCrombie3 @chalkey1973 You can try. Outright refusal only happens with police involvement. Ultimately if customer insists, ignoring warnings etc, with or without police involvement, moneybis given but babk record to try to absolve themselves

@MattyBeer @chalkey1973 If the Banks refuse to give customers their own money to pay legitimate requests of funds to cover work they have commissioned - can the customer seek compensation from the Bank if the price increases because of the banks mistake in saying they believe the money request is a scam

@girlinvestor @chalkey1973 It does seem a lot. No idea if it's normal, I've done staged payments recently. I suppose it depends on outlay for tradesman.

@chalkey1973 @MattyBeer Fortnightly progress payments are pretty standard on chunky builds, usually with the first upfront for initial materials & wages. 50% on materials such as flooring, and special orders such as bespoke doors is standard. But 50% of the whole build upfront is asking for trouble IME

@erikcorry @MattyBeer @lobsterpants66 @tubey69meal42 @FeelitWorking @chalkey1973 It took banks a stupidly long amount of time to introduce a simple name and account matching process to ‘protect us’ (protect themselves from claims). So absolutely the pressure must stay on the filthy rich banks, so they can spend a fraction of that money combating fraud.

@MattyBeer @lobsterpants66 @tubey69meal42 @FeelitWorking @chalkey1973 Yes Matt, but that is a fairly specific example to use to prove your point. The big banks had their most profitable year ever in 2025. The most profitable year before was 2024. They’re doing pretty well despite your concerns. They should roll out more protections.

@matchstickmint @chalkey1973 It's bollocks mate don't know what punishment should be but they should defo have to pay money back, even to bank if they covered the losses.

@chalkey1973 @MattyBeer Reported as fraud. Bank would not revoke transfer. Finally found and taken to court. Avoided jail sentence but fined and required to pay me back approx. 30% of what I paid out …. Still waiting to receive something. And I was one of 4 or 5 ‘customers’ scammed by him 😡

@lobsterpants66 @tubey69meal42 @FeelitWorking @chalkey1973 Spot on Chris say what you want about banks but there is no fairness that they are effectively the ones defrauded when Joe public makes bad decision. It's not just big banks either, it apllies to building societies inc one for example who only made 100k profit last year.....

@decka1969 @Greenhough65291 @chalkey1973 Effectively the cashier will ask the same questions your app will. The difference being they are human, so will either dive deeper and spot red flags better, or make mistakes, be over cautious etc. They are human

@Greenhough65291 @chalkey1973 @MattyBeer Read the OP. They went into the bank to do a bank transfer. Obviously they don't do Internet banking. But you've determined they're a cowboy or fiddling tax because you can't read.

@fletcherkathy8 @chalkey1973 No but they could ask you questions to make sure you are not being scammed. Defo take invoices with you and be clear work has been completed if it has.

@MattyBeer @chalkey1973 You have me worried now. I have agreed a price with a painter & decorator, the carpenter has just finished (& been paid), the damp specialist is coming in a few days, waiting for quotes for carpets & curtains. Are you saying some bank person could pull the rug out from under me.

@chalkey1973 @MattyBeer A customer refusing to pay a workman is nothing to do with a bank refusing to allow a transfer before completing some security checks to try and prevent fraud. The bank staff don't know the customer or workman, or what agreement they have. That's why they check...

@chalkey1973 Yeah no issue with your view & I don't know what answer is. Well I do, we need to crush the scammers. But if we dont noone is winning & the pain for a customer to make a wdl (and they will still be able to) is probably the best option as you get your money, and noone is scammed

@MattyBeer Look at it this way then. He does the work doesn't take a deposit. Lays out up front for the materials. Works 3 days customers refuse to pay him. Who's getting scammed now. You book a holiday, pay a deposit to secure a holiday pay the balance b4 you go..what's the difference

@chalkey1973 Mate not saying it was but a large number of requests now are how do the cashiers know. Anyone can knock up an invoice, and they do, it's a shit state of affairs but if laws say banks pay for grannies mistakes what are they going to do.

@MattyBeer A scam. These people had my mate round to price up a job. Chose the doors and ironmongery agreed a price gave them an invoice and agreed to the payment terms. What part of this is a scam. He had a invoice with his full contact details on it and has his own website.
