@EddieDicki97662 @ATabarrok @jbarro When the rate falls everyone prepays at par to reduce interest. When it rises they prepay at a lower price to reduce principal. Switching to a new loan like this is called "lægge om" and your bank advises you on the timing.

@EddieDicki97662 @ATabarrok @jbarro Over a thirty year period with rates oscillating up and down prepayment is quite common. Much more than 2-3%. Prepayments are routinely financed with new loans at the next market rates.

@MattyBeer @lobsterpants66 @tubey69meal42 @FeelitWorking @chalkey1973 Yes Matt, but that is a fairly specific example to use to prove your point. The big banks had their most profitable year ever in 2025. The most profitable year before was 2024. They’re doing pretty well despite your concerns. They should roll out more protections.

A mate of mine who's a joiner priced a job up to supply and fit a full house of doors, told customers 50 % up front to cover materials. The rest on completion. Customers went to the Halifax bank in town today. Bank wouldn't transfer payment . Stating this could be fraud

@mattyglesias It's maybe related that DC was overloaded with January 6th cases?

@erikcorry @LizHurra @LaraJBitar Yes he reported their general statement that they’re bombing bridges to disrupt supply lines, then he reports from one already bombed, at which point they return and try to kill him.

@MisterBossy @LizHurra @LaraJBitar His own tweet the day before where he quotes Israel as saying they are bombing bridges. This was one of the bridges, which is why he was there.

@AutismCapital It’s looking more likely that Netanyahu is dead and that would change things.

Is Trump throwing Israel under the bus? What's happening right now? "Israel...has violently lashed out at a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran...The United States knew nothing about this attack...NO MORE ATTACKS WILL BE MADE BY ISRAEL...with or without the help or consent of Israel..." Trump is trying to signal to the public that nobody bosses the US around, but the public believes that Israel bosses the US around. A very interesting post by Trump. Is he trying to backpedal out of Iran and shift blame?

@euanjs @inerati What's wrong with AirPods + Pixel? I'm very happy with the combination, but perhaps I'm missing out?

@JohnDCook It bothered me that the message of the new Frankenstein film is that the monster is just misunderstood, when he's clearly a murderous psycho.

@fhinkel I'm sure that's true, but the way to fix this is to iterate fast, try this a lot of times and collect experience. That means not having to get approval on a 100 page ethics statement for every dog. It's more like an engineering challenge at this point, not a drug trial situation.

So happy for Rosie. As someone with a PhD in math/bioinformatics, I want to love the story. But the reality is a lot more sobering. Making a single mRNA vaccine is actually easy now. The hard part isn't the code. The hard part is the biology. We can predict neoantigens all day using AlphaFold, but the human (or canine) immune system is a black box. Just because the AI says a protein "should" be a target doesn't mean the T-cells will agree.

@Gaurab You are scare mongering over an element that is 21% of the atmosphere. I think this is the least of our worries.

Musk wants to launch Starship 1,000 times a year. Each launch requires 3,744 tons of liquid oxygen. At that cadence, SpaceX alone would consume 36% of all the oxygen the United States produces. During COVID, hospitals bought so much oxygen that SpaceX couldn't fuel its rockets. Gwynne Shotwell asked a conference audience to email her if they had any to spare. That was at 31 launches a year. They did 165 last year. SpaceX chose stainless steel over carbon fiber because it's abundant. But liquid oxygen has no substitute. When solar demand exploded, polysilicon went from $40 to $475 per kilogram in four years. Oxygen supply faces the same constraint: Air separation plants cost hundreds of millions and take years to permit and build. Reusable rockets made launches cheap. The propellant supply chain is the next bottleneck.
