Mary’s Unique and Preeminent Role as Intercessor Mary is not merely one among the saints; she is the Mother of God (Luke 1:43), hailed by the angel as “full of grace” (Luke 1:28): “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.” She herself prophesies that “all generations shall call me blessed” (Luke 1:48). At the wedding feast at Cana, Mary models perfect intercession on behalf of others (John 2:1-5): “And the wine failing, the mother of Jesus saith to him: They have no wine. And Jesus saith to her: Woman, what is that to me and to thee? my hour is not yet come. His mother saith to the waiters: Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye.” She notices the need, brings it to her Son, and her request moves Jesus to perform His first public miracle—even though “His hour had not yet come.” The servants obey her, and the miracle follows. This is a living image of Mary’s ongoing maternal intercession: she takes our needs to Christ, and He responds. We also see her united with the infant Church in persevering prayer (Acts 1:14): “All these were persevering with one mind in prayer with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.” Mary’s intercession flows entirely through Christ, the one Mediator (Hebrews 12:24), yet her prayers are uniquely powerful because of her singular grace and closeness to her Son. In summary, asking Mary and the saints for intercession is not an addition to Scripture but a direct application of it. The Bible reveals a living, praying Church that spans heaven and earth. The saints—especially the “just made perfect” and Mary, full of grace—offer our prayers to God with perfect charity and power. Far from detracting from Christ, this magnifies His work in the one Body, where “if one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together” (1 Corinthians 12:26).
