If a person who's never heard of Christ asked why are we in 2026, you obviously have to explain thag zero is the year Jesus was born. That's it, no religion involved! Take a wild guess. The world uses that calendar largely because European power, trade, empire, navigation, diplomacy, science, colonial administration, and later international bureaucracy made it convenient. Calendars spread through institutions, not because the entire planet held a referendum and decided Nicene Christianity had won. That is exactly why BCE/CE makes sense. The numbering system has a Christian historical origin, obviously. Nobody serious is denying that. But using it as a global civil convention does not require Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, atheists, historians, archaeologists, classicists and everyone else to write a tiny Christian confession into the date label. There is also the mildly awkward fact that the Christian era is generally thought to be historically off by a few years. The AD system was devised centuries later by Dionysius Exiguus, and most historians place Jesus’s birth a few years before 1 AD, often around 6-4 BCE, partly because Matthew places it during the reign of Herod the Great. So yes, the calendar has Christian inheritance. It also probably misdates the birth it is supposedly centred on. CE/BCE simply recognises that a historically Christian dating system has become a shared secular convention. We use Arabic numerals without converting to Islam. We use weekdays named after gods without worshipping them. We use July and August without swearing fealty to Caesar. This really is not difficult unless one is determined to turn notation into martyrdom.

This is a confident little pile-up of confusions. BC/AD and BCE/CE are not different calendars. They are different labels for the same year-numbering convention. The Gregorian calendar is the calendar system. "Before Christ", "Anno Domini", "Before Common Era", and "Common Era" are era labels. Mixing those up is like thinking changing "miles" to "kilometres" alters the road. Also, "Anno Domini" does not mean "after Christ". It means "in the year of our Lord". The old schoolroom "BC/AD" pairing is already a bit theologically messy, which is one reason BCE/CE is useful in academic and inter-cultural contexts. Nobody is deleting history by saying BCE and CE. The numbering is still historically derived from the Christian era. The difference is that scholarship does not require everyone else to perform a tiny confession of Christian framing every time they mention Julius Caesar, Babylon, or the Permian extinction. So, yes, use BC/AD if you like. But pretending BCE/CE is an attack on history is just culture-war grievance trying to pass itself off as chronological literacy.
