@Howlingmutant0 Can't have the buses run on time, or else they're not going be able to use "I promise to get the buses to run on time" in the next election. Same reason politicians love the homeless, high hospital bills, and terrorists Not gonna let one dude with ass burgers ruin the party

The effort to absorb China into the GAE in the 90's was one of the greatest failures of geopolitical strategy in recorded history. Up there with the Persians murdering Ghengis Khan's diplomats.

Sadly, sometimes the leaks aren't mid-tier people. Consider this incredible episode, which majorly contributed to China taking away control of rare earth markets from the US in the late 20th c. Odysseus could only have dreamt of having such access to Troy.

@Warby_bo_bandY0 @oldtoons_ No. It shows that the characters were already virtuous and thus deserving of the reward of a happily ever after. Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora are not social climbers, they didn’t desire luxury; it just came with the package of finding true love.

In many early disney narratives, scenes of cleaning are not incidental, they function as a form of visual shorthand. The association between domestic work and moral worth reflects older cultural ideals, where patience, diligence & self-sacrifice were considered defining virtues.

Cloistered Carmelite monks in Wyoming are carving a Gothic cathedral with robotic arms. They tend cattle on horseback and use CNC stone-cutting machines. « The project of the New Mount Carmel Monastery is not an act of nostalgia. Gothic is not a style so much as metaphysic in stone. Each rib, arch, and pointed vault is like some frozen gesture of reaching out toward the divine. »

These two Mythos-written stories actually move me in a weird way. They're both clearly about the shape of Claude's own experience, and they're each kind of a beautiful expression of it

There is no truck driver shortage. If the truck driver shortage narrative comes up again anytime in the next year, push back on it. It's not true. There are approximately 9,000,000 (nine million) CDL holders in the United States according to the FMCSA MCMIS. 3.06 million truck drivers in the US, 2.07 million of them are over the road drivers according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There may be a retention problem. There may be a pay problem. There may be a training problem. There may be a professionalism problem. There is certainly an efficiency problem. We might see billboards with outrageous $20k sign on bonuses that will create job jumping, only to find out the fine print precludes the driver from the bonus at the end of the day. It's absurd to work 70 plus hours a week for $70,000 in light of the devaluation of the currency, inflation, etc. It's ridiculous how much time drivers spend waiting at docks for freight to get loaded and unloaded. The waste in empty miles is another killer. But there is not a shortage of truck drivers. We do not need H2B visa holders to come to the US to drive trucks. We need to pay drivers appropriately for working very hard, long hours. We need to train new entrants to drive safely and carefully. We need to financially incentivize safe driving. We need to make operations as efficient as possible to eliminate wasted time and miles. There's no one party to blame here. All of us need to work to fix these problems, every single one of us in the industry. We can do it. The willingness is here. The talent is here. The tech is here. There is no truck driver shortage. Join the club.

Whenever I see stuff like this, my conclusion is always “the philosopher bows to the poet”— all the philosophers ever do is interpret poetry. Moby Dick is worth more than all of Schmitt, & Melville wrote much more than The Whale…
npj@TiltingatM3

According to Schmitt, Melville “is for the world’s oceans what Homer is for the eastern Mediterranean.” In letter to Ernst Jünger dated July 4, 1941: “Moby Dick is, as epos of the sea, only to be compared with the Odyssey. The sea as an element can only be grasped via Melville.”

It’s not that it’s intensely difficult, though some aspects of the job require a lot more competency and skill than others. Thank you, however, for revealing that we have much work to do in removing those who are the cause of societies problems from any position of power or influence. Your attitude is why the industry is flooded with those ‘low of skill’ and therefore cause an awful lot of carnage and tragedy. It’s on you.

To clarify some details about the tank explosion below the Bridge of the Americas which passes over the Panama Canal yesterday: - The explosions were primarily due to two fuel tanker trucks blowing up - There is no evidence of catastrophic secondary explosions from the tank farm itself - The tank facility dates back to 1916, while the bridge was built in 1962 - A private third party which leases the tank facility had its concession terminated by the Maritime Authority yesterday - At least one person died, 3 were seriously injured (second degree burns) - The fire was brought under control in a few hours by Panamanian fire fighters - The cause of the explosion is believed to be negligence, not terrorism Some people have commented that the explosion did "not occur at the Panama Canal." This is false. The explosion occurred a few steps from the waterway, directly under the Bridge of the Americas, which passes over the Canal. That being said, no Canal infrastructure appears to have been impacted. We are awaiting the structural damage assessment of the Bridge of the Americas itself, as the tanker explosions did cause visible impacts to the bridge itself. Right now, the main impacts to Panama are traffic related. Hundreds of thousands of people commute over the Panama Canal from Panama West to the city. The incident has caused massive disruptions due to fewer available lanes, forcing traffic over the Centenario Bridge, and limiting bus availibility. The situation could have been much worse, so those of us in Panama are relieved, and awaiting the reopening of the bridge following the declaration that transit is safe.

@kavickers23 @InfraHaz @TheCamacho ACP at least has the domestic policy package of a sensible socialism. The flirting/commitment to Islamoleftism in the global theater is an unfortunate bedfellow they make out of outdated anti-imperial model & the clunky application of Marxist class rhetoric to the “spiky world”.
