New analysis from @ONECampaign reveals a worrying trend in global health aid: when you strip out COVID funding, aid for health reached a 13-year low in 2021. Did donors just temoporarily shift health $ to help respond to the pandemic? The outlook may be more bleak then that 🧵👇

Investments in health care and development are impossible without financial resources, but the progress that leads to economic growth—which in turn generates those resources—is impossible without improvements in health outcomes and poverty reduction.

"In 2024, the world’s 75 poorest countries, more than half of which are in Africa, will have to spend more than $185 bn, 7.5pc of their combined GDP, to service their debts. According to the World Bank, that’s more than what they spend annually on health, education, and infrastructure together." foreignaffairs.com/africa/debt-dr….

Good reminder from Olivia Ngou: the reason most people think AIDS, TB & malaria is over is because the tireless work to fight these diseases is *working* “If you stop that work, trust me it’s going to come back quickly” #WHS2024 @ImpSanteAfrique

Bottom line: 1) flexibility & consistency of @GlobalFund & @gavi funding is essential to support health outcomes across the board. 2) counties need additional channels of funding for health to sustainably respond to emerging threats.

Minister of Health from Malawi passionately flags that the health impact of climate shocks are a top concern: “we use @GlobalFund money and the @gavi money to address the impact of climate shocks…” noting there is no climate funding to draw from. #WHS2024

Woof. @gavi CEO notes that fragmentation at the country level trickles down & contributes to fragmentation between @GlobalFund & Gavi programs at the county level. If gov bureaucracy is the bar we have to clear for better coordination, we’re in trouble! 🤦‍♀️ #WHS2024

For those of us who follow global health, these data aren't super surprising. But I do think the insight are important & further confirm that healthODA is in a precarious position if not re-prioritized. Here's our analysis - let me know what you think! data.one.org/data-dives/the…

There are 4 major global health replenishments taking place in the next 12 months (Gavi, Global Fund, WHO, Pandemic Fund) +at least a handful others for broader development objectives (IDA, GPE, ADF...). These will be a bellweather for where the world stands on health financing.

Mpox Response Milestone!🚨 Earlier today, @WHO prequalified the first vaccine for mpox. This will enable institutions like @Gavi and @UNICEF to start procuring vaccines directly from manufacturers. Why this matters + what we're watching for next👇 who.int/news/item/13-0…

Let’s just take a minute here and ask: exactly why are all the vaccines in rich countries to begin with?

And finally, I'll be watching the @g20org Health Working Group meeting Sept 1-3 to see how countries plan to support Africa's efforts in fighting Mpox. The timing of this meeting is perfect for decisive & collective action .. wil the #g20Brazil deliver?

To improve what we know about this quickly evolving crisis, the @AfricaCDC is deploying 72 epidemiologists this week to support Community Health Workers & data collection. Better data = better response.
