Last Saturday, we were informed that the state would be responsible for our protection, and we were prohibited from bringing our firearms as they had taken control of our security. Later that night, an assassin stormed the event, exposing the significant security lapses. However, something extraordinary occurred that night that I can’t shake off. The goalpost shifted. The night was deemed a success because the perpetrator failed to reach the president or the cabinet. What?! Look, I don’t believe what transpired on Saturday night at WHCD was the result of a massive conspiracy. I don’t think the law enforcement officers who rushed toward danger were not brave and honorable. Nevertheless, I refuse to accept that this was our best performance. Washington seems content with waiting for us all to move on to the next story. I refuse to move on. Our entire security apparatus demands scrutiny. How many times have we heard after a major casualty event that there were signs that were overlooked? Last Saturday night, they assured us that they had control, but they didn’t. And if you’re going to ask us to surrender our firearms, you better rise to the occasion. They did not.

My family and I watched the 60 Minutes interview with Donald Trump and Norah O’Donnell last night, and we were shocked. Seeing a president speak to a woman journalist with that level of contempt — and a clear allergy to facts — is disturbing, though at this point not unexpected given his pattern of behavior. But that is the problem. Because when that level of disrespect from the highest office in the country repeats itself, it starts to trickle down into our culture and define what power looks like, shaping how boys and plenty of men see women and girls and what they come to accept as normal behavior.

It doesn’t matter if he was a Republican or a Democrat. The world is filled with radicalized, disgruntled men. Only America gives them unfettered access to arsenals and ammunition. Until we regulate guns, this will keep happening.

Sincere question: do Trump supporters who genuinely want to reduce political violence actually think that lobbing transparently hypocritical accusations about the left's rhetoric is in any way effective? Are we really gonna go through another cycle where MAGA folks point out incendiary rhetoric on the left without ever acknowledging that some of the most violent and incendiary rhetoric in America comes from the President and his supporters? Do you not think the rest of the country has eyes and ears? It's truly awful that President Trump has been the target of political violence. It's also truly awful how he's frequently talked about his political opponents: accusing them of treason, amplifying calls for their execution, publicly celebrating their death, calling them scum, garbage, vermin, animals. It was like 3 weeks ago that he threatened the annihilation of an entire civilization! It was just a few months ago that he and his White House knowingly smeared two Americans who'd been killed by federal agents as domestic terrorists! I hate political violence. I hate what happened last night. Probably 99% of Americans agree. But let's not insult everyone's intelligence by pretending that the most powerful person in the world isn't a huge part of the problem here.

I am grateful that the President and all the guests from last night's event are safe, and no one was seriously injured. I thank first responders for their work. While an investigation is underway, we should all be clear that political violence has no place in America.

Great seeing @JoeGruters tonight at Mar-a-Lago. He is doing a fantastic job leading the RNC. Republicans are fired up for the midterms! It was great talking about the Save America Act tonight - we have to get it done!

I am an organizer who went to Congress. Not a politician who used to organize. An organizer. Still. Every day. Because organizing teaches you things no campaign or briefing book ever will. What people are actually up against. Who you're accountable to, and what happens when you forget. 20 years of that work is the foundation of everything I do in Congress. We need more organizers in power. Not fewer. 💜

Rooting against Donald Trump does not mean you are rooting against America. It means you are fighting evil. Donald Trump is evil. 1. His policies are evil. 2. His crimes are evil. 3. His wars are evil. 4. His global POV is rooted in evil. 5. His hate is evil. That's my view.
