@Nerdcognito I got this screen as a teenager, and was even able to keep it and use throughout the first decade of adulthood for a nine year long Greyhawk campaign. Unfortunately it has been lost to the sands of time, but it brought many a great memory with it and was well worth the price.

It's an older code, sir, but it checks out.

Luke Gygax's Greyhawk book just got clarified as Borderlands of Iuz not Shield Lands. This feels like selective nostalgia while they keep shifting the game away from Classic Gaming. Is this another WotC move to control the narrative around original D&D settings?

@Nerdcognito First off, WoTC had NOTHING to do with the title! This is what our team decided and it is of course, subject to change. No nostalgia, just adventuring in a gritty, early 570s, Greyhawk setting. One more time I will stress, WoTC has had ZERO input on this project as of today!

@David_S_Gale @Blackmoor_Film A good DM would have told him that playing a character who knows everything about everything is not the best choice for a brand new player who knows nothing.

@Blackmoor_Film I get where he’s coming from, and a good table (DM & other players) should help him play it. He’s got a high INT character, but doesn’t have the knowledge as a player the character would; high CHA characters often run into the same problem where they’re expected to RP “properly”.

It's hard to explain to people that D&D isn't real. The Paralyzing Overthink I see coming from new players makes me sad because I can't show them how to Play In The Moment like all of us Classic RPG gamers do. Make believe Elf Game should be easy, and usually is. The expectation that their game should be just like watching an episode of the Witcher and full of deep lore isn't even what real life is like. I am not mocking this post I found because it makes me sad they can't just play and have fun. IMHO sometimes you need to go to the dungeon, kill things, and take the treasure.

@OriginalGrogna1 I saw it and liked it as a kid. The Satanic Panic didn't really affect me at all besides having to watch TSR fold to the pressure and make their product more PC for AD&D 2e.

@Nobleshield If you think that a wizard conserving their spells and waiting for the right time to use them is a bad way to play a wizard then you don't know how to properly play a wizard. Try a better example.

@Real_J_Mitchell The fact it's totally arbitrary is my issue. If a wizard conserves their one spell until the right time should they be penalized? Etc. It's all just DM fiat.

Unpopular opinion: I like Milestone Leveling in a "conventional" campaign (where everyone levels at the same rate ofc). Makes things 1000x easier to manage in those situations.

@Nobleshield Doesn't sound like the kind of game I'd want to play. Leveling up = "Learning" If you haven't learned anything you shouldn't level up. Imagine studying a martial art and thinking just showing up every day will get you your black belt.

@Nobleshield Imagine a school system that didn't have "the silly grading thing" and passed students along to the next grade regardless of whether or not they learned anything.

@Real_J_Mitchell In 5.5 yeah, the power level is too wide (one of the things I really dislike). But it also doesn't have the silly grading thing from AD&D.

@Wizards_DnD None of my D&D knowledge is useless. Every ounce of time I spend deep diving into the game is time well spent.

@Nobleshield Sounds like the system is broken to me if it requires everybody to be equal all the time in order to work properly. So if a wizard is absolutely playing his character top notch but his buddy the thief is bumbling away & playing like a jabroni, they both level up at the same time?

@Real_J_Mitchell Kinda, but it makes handling "level appropriate" things much easier. It's not a solution for an open style campaign at all (or one where XP differs by class), but for 5.5 and its sibling games, I think it works better in the long run.
