My ancestors lived in villages and had cattle, farmstead animals and large swaths of farmland and also grew tobacco. After that, in the 19th century, men started 'going out' to work en masses and 'separate spheres' truly emerged. But poor women still worked in factories, as domestic servants, in markets etc etc.
