Rioting can cause people to die. There is no doubt about that. Any other opinion is juvenile. When you are participating in something and it is reasonable to believe someone can die or get hurt and someone dies (or is severely injured), you can be help liable. Throw in some extra things like planning evidence, bringing guns, and it’s a hard case to defend.
Keep in mind that the jury also didn’t bite all the way on all charges for some of the charged individuals.
Whether or not the sentencing is proportional to the crime and whether the conviction is correct are two different appeals as well.
An appeals court will look at if there is a legal error in the conviction… not reweigh evidence. However, appealing the sentencing is different and may likely succeed. The sentencing is quite bizarre.
