The person who has inspired me most in my life is my wife, Cheryl.
In 2008, Cheryl and I got married in California because our marriage wasn’t recognized in our home state. Then in 2012, when a constitutional amendment that would have banned same-sex marriage was on the ballot, I knew I had to fight for our future.
So I got off the sidelines and got involved — advocating for people to oppose the amendment. It was my first real organizing experience. And when Minnesotans rejected that amendment, I saw firsthand the power everyday people have when they come together. I knew then that I wasn’t done.
To this day, I carry that spirit with me in my work fighting for Minnesotans. And through it all, Cheryl remains the person who inspires me to do better every single day.
