@JazRignall Played it in a small arcade in York called The Dome. Can't remember seeing it anywhere else sadly

35 years ago, I reviewed R-Type II. I thought it was fantastic. However, it unfortunately looked and played very similarly to its predecessor, which probably resulted in arcade owners not feeling especially compelled to buy it. Ultimately, it was a great game, but hard to find.
