Project Hail Mary is very easy to like, but hard to love... a breezy crowd-pleaser that offers a fun pastiche of your favorite sci-fi movies, but fails to truly capture any of the core qualities that made those movies so thematically rich and monumental:

@imPatrickT Might just be my taste yeah but in this specific case, with this franchise, I think there's a reasonable enough argument to make for why a (mostly) real landscape just works better than an overprocessed, digitally painted one

I think this has far more to do with taste changing in ways some of us are rejecting due to our personal experience / nostalgia. I don’t think it’s right or wrong to prefer either here.

The VFX is technically incredible - but man.. just seeing how much 'grit' the raw plates have... The inflatable raft didn't have to be digital... I get that they had the 'shot' in mind, and wanted it done in a very specific way... but maybe they missed out on some cool 'thing' that happened when they inflated a real raft. Maybe she got a fright and fell backwards. Maybe it expanded and clipped her arm. Maybe it spun in place and she reacted in a real human way - a jump, a laugh - something that could have happened that was lost. And what's the point of shooting on location if you're gonna replace and relight 90% of the shots? I know the crew went above and beyond to shoot on location - lugging the camera equipment, really getting that 'documentary' feel. And then it just got like... varnished over.

Like, yeah, OTNOD is beautiful too and I'm not saying it ruined the movie or anything but imo, cueing the original piece with the ending aligns much better with the emotional beats and just gives it more personality:
