My psychoanalysis of why Geno did what he did last night: Geno never got the love Pat Summitt got and never will get the love Dawn Staley has. I think that eats at him, even though he’s widely considered the GOAT in women’s basketball. He’s always been a bit of an outsider. A male coach in a female-dominated space, viewed differently whether people want to admit it or not. He has a massive chip on his shoulder. He’s spent his whole career proving he’s the best. And he is. But it’s still not enough. All the wins, banners, and championships might bring him respect, but they don’t bring the same love, admiration, or reverence people have for Dawn and Pat. For someone who is an ultra competitor like Geno respect is not enough. He needs it all, but he will never get it. Thats why he acted out last night.

Staley made a decision based on what she believed was right at the time. BYU investigated and said they found no evidence, but that doesn’t automatically mean nothing happened. She stood on her stance, and unless new information proves otherwise, that’s where it is. Have a good evening

Obviously this is a carefully managed PR statement more than a genuine apology. “It’s unlike what I do” is rich coming from a guy with a long history of sideline behavior and dismissive post-game comments toward opponents. While he does mention his relationship with the staff twice but never specifically names Dawn Staley. For a program-to-program apology, that’s a noticeable omission. Dawn deserves an apology by name.
