When Mayor-elect Mamdani takes office, he will control over 6,300 miles of streets throughout the five boroughs. Reducing car dependence is one of the best ways to reduce costs for New Yorkers. Owning a car costs nearly $9,000 annually, while taking transit costs just $1,500.

New York City's speed cameras are only triggered when a driver is going at least 11 mph above the speed limit. Going 26 mph in a school zone with a 15 mph speed limit is, in fact, speeding.

16mph isn't speeding. It's a general tax on drivers, intended specifically to extract as much money as possible while frustrating ordinary people out of their cars entirely. It's no coincidence that this impossibly low speed limit materialized during a budget crisis. This is the action of a government that hates its constituents.
