To accelerate progress towards elimination of hepatitis B and C infection by 2030, @WHO has launched a practical guide to support countries turn evidence-based recommendations into concrete action. These measures are based on priority actions that have already been shown to work In 2025, the #Maldives achieved triple elimination of mother-to-child transmission of hepatitis B as well as HIV and syphilis. In 2024, #Namibia became the first country in Africa – and the first high-burden country in the world - to achieve WHO validation on the path towards eliminating vertical mother-to-child transmission of both hepatitis B and HIV. In 2023, #Egypt became the first country to achieve WHO validation on the path to elimination of hepatitis C. WHO's Global Health Sector Strategy aims for a 90% reduction in new infections and a 65% reduction in deaths from hepatitis B and C by 2030. As of today, 58 countries have eliminated at least one neglected tropical disease (NTD), putting the world on a strong path toward achieving WHO’s target of 100 countries by 2030. However, the fall in global health financing threatens to reverse *these* hard-won gains. Without renewed action, including investment, NTDs will continue to cost affected families and communities an estimated US$33 billion annually in lost wages and out-of-pocket expenses. I urge all governments to safeguard past progress, mobilize new funding and leadership, accelerate innovation, and integrate health services—including mental health—into NTD responses. True elimination means freeing people not only from the disease, but from the shame, isolation, and despair that too often accompany it.

As a founding member of @WHO, the United States of America has contributed significantly to many of WHO’s greatest achievements, including the eradication of smallpox. WHO has always engaged with the US, and all Member States, with full respect for their sovereignty. Unfortunately, the reasons cited for the US decision to withdraw from WHO are untrue. The notification of withdrawal makes both the US and the world less safe. We hope the US will return to active participation in WHO in the future. Meanwhile, WHO remains steadfastly committed to working with all countries in pursuit of its core mission and constitutional mandate: the highest attainable standard of health as a fundamental right for all people. 2025 was a pivotal year for global health and the @WHO, highlighted by major achievements and challenges. The adoption of the WHO Pandemic Agreement showcased effective multilateral cooperation. However, aid cuts threatened to reverse decades of progress and could increase childhood mortality for the first time this century. Amid these challenges lies an opportunity for countries to achieve self-reliance and for the WHO to enhance its independence. The world still needs the WHO, which remains committed to its vision of health as a right for all, not a privilege for some.

Congratulations to #Brazil on becoming the first country in South America – and largest globally – to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV. This year, Universal Health Coverage Day shines a spotlight on the devastating human impact of unaffordable health costs. 4.6 billion people lack access to essential health services, and 2.1 billion face financial hardship by paying for care out of their own pockets. Around the world, @WHO is working with countries to close these gaps as part of their journey towards universal health coverage. Because health should not be a luxury for those who can afford it, but a right for all.

Strong leadership shown at the @UN General Assembly as Member States adopted the Political Declaration on noncommunicable diseases and mental health. By setting bold targets to #BeatNCDs—such as cancer, diabetes, and heart and lung diseases—and to promote mental health by 2030, countries reaffirmed their commitment to protecting people’s health from the world’s deadliest and most prevalent conditions. The declaration commits to helping hundreds of millions more people reduce tobacco use, control hypertension, and access mental health care, through stronger policies, expanded primary health care, affordable services, and better surveillance. I am delighted that, together with the @JapanGov and the World Bank, @WHO has launched the Universal Health Coverage Knowledge Hub here in Tokyo. The Hub will play a crucial role in sharing advice and guidance to advance universal health coverage globally, and strengthen financial and health capacities to expand #HealthForAll. This is vital as 4.6 billion people still lack access to essential health services, and more 1 one in 4 globally face financial hardship due to health costs, according to the Universal Health Coverage Global Monitoring Report launched today by @WHO and the @WorldBank.
