@avidseries

Good and bad ideas are fairly equally distributed across the political spectrum. Erect a strawman in my replies, you get blocked.

Let's put this into perspective: UC regents eliminated the SAT requirement because they found it "racist", even after their own (very left-leaning) expert panel declared that the tests predict college performance better than any other metric. A lot of us warned what would happen, and now it's happening.

University of California STEM professors want standardized tests back due to severe math deficiencies among students: “We now observe preparation gaps so severe that instructors must reteach middle school mathematics” “The current admissions metric, based primarily on GPA & essays, can no longer reliably distinguish readiness for university-level STEM majors in an era of severe grade inflation & AI assisted application essays”

@avidseries Are Hispanics included as White in these studies, like they are in crime statistics?

This isn't correct. There's a large mean IQ gap between European-ancestry people and people living in India that strongly favors Europeans.* However, here in the US, Indian-ancestry mean IQ is higher than that of whites. Assuming a white American mean of 100, the IQ average of Indians living here US is estimated to be somewhere between 105 and 110. This is because of selection in immigration. *Let me circle back to the Indian national mean. Studies provide varying estimates, but most fall well under 100. The limitation with these data is that India is a nation with a sub-optimal environment for intelligence, and it's not clear how much of the present white-Indian gap will close once these environmental variables approach Western levels (if they ever do). On top of that, it's a genetically diverse country with a caste system. Bottom line: No one really knows what the Indian genotypic IQ mean is.
Adam Salazar@the_0ther_

@lack0options @avidseries Why would that even be important? By the way, statistically speaking, Indians are smarter than whites.

@GenHeres123 The point I "conceded" isn't a point that's material to the robustness of IQ as a measure of general intelligence. "Glad we could clear that up" is a passive-aggressive phrase that I have explicitly listed as a reason to block people. Happy trails!

@avidseries Thank you for the concession. Acknowledging that IQ is a behavioral output metric rather than the biological system itself is precisely my point. Confusing the tool’s predictive utility with actual biological hardware is a classic reification fallacy. Glad we could clear that up

Don't be a jerk. I couldn't respond to you because when Taleb blocked me, replying to anyone in the thread was impossible. You're not entitled to a response. I get 100s of replies a day. I don't have time to reply to anything other than a small fraction of them. But I'll give you the courtesy: IQ is an incredibly robust and predictive statistical tool. It successfully predicts academic achievement, job performance, and socioeconomic outcomes better than almost any other psychological metric. However, it remains a mathematical extraction derived from behavioral testing, not a tangible biological fluid or discrete neurological structure. It measures the output of a complex biological system, but it is not the system itself.

@nntaleb @charlesmurray Devastating rebuttal. You have no training or expertise in this research area. None. Zero. Why wander into a discussion in which you have constructed a petulant and willed ignorance?

IQ often predicts important life outcomes more robustly than other known variable. This isn't my opinion. It's the finding of 100s of studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. No major finding in psychological research can claim effect sizes as large as IQ. None are as endlessly replicable. Ignore the pseudoscientific projections of deep personal insecurity by people like Taleb, and stick to the science.

@Ne0Mango Yeah, to a large extent. But, for example, East Asian nations in the post-war with huge environmental challenges (like China and South Korea decades ago) often had higher IQ means than much wealthier and more economically developed nations.

The inestimable damage that's been done by the lack of moral courage of our institutions in acknowledging the existence of large differences between groups in distributions of intelligence. That moral failure touches and damages almost everything.

The one inexorable feature of "anti-racism" is that it kills excellence by forcing both artificial "inclusion" of low-performing groups and punitive "exclusion" of high-performing ones. It's almost always the reverse of what you'd want to do if you cared about a culture of achievement and excellence.
