@CharlieMoloney My personal feeling is that, if they were treating it as terrorism (which is fair, tbh), the defendants should have been able to explain their reasoning in court as part of their defence. It seems wrong to deny them the opportunity to use it in defence ti then use it against them

If these Filton 4 sentences are too high, the Court of Appeal can look at. But I am just genuinely amazed there are commentators who were not aware that if you cause north of £1million in criminal damage then you will usually be looking at 3-5 years inside minimum regardless

@CharlieMoloney @AaronBastani Unusual? This judge cut his teeth in behind closed doors cases for the government and security services. He helped the Gov with their ludicrous proscription against Palestine Action. Are you just a fucking sheep, happy that whatever the government does is okidoki? Fuck you man.

@AaronBastani If parliament gave courts the power to find that an aggravating factor is a 'terrorist connection', then there will inevitably be a case where that aggravating factor can be used, lawfully. If the law is wrong and unjust, parliament can change it. legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2020/17/…

@BillAckman @BernieSanders @elonmusk @SpaceX Yeah, let's celebrate the fact that people can become mega rich at the expense of everyone else, avoid tax that everyone else pays, and completely ignore those who aren't lucky enough to be the sons of diamond mine owners.

.@BernieSanders , it is a time to celebrate. @elonmusk has created enormous value for society by building @SpaceX, driving down the cost of rocket launches and creating a global satellite communication network that has brought high speed, low-cost internet and communication access to hundreds of millions and eventually billions of people along with critical advantages for our military and our nation’s defense. SpaceX and its technologies will cause an acceleration in the growth of wages and wealth creation globally, including in some of the poorest communities in the U.S. and around the world. Access to low-cost, high speed communications everywhere will allow children around the world to be educated, families to build businesses, and life-saving medical knowledge and care to be available everywhere. SpaceX will materially bring down the cost of compute, advancing AI and humanity. Meanwhile, 4,000 SpaceX employees yesterday became millionaires, including hourly wage employees who you claim you are trying to help. The Elon Musks of the world drive growth, global GDP, and provide access to goods and services at lower cost that would otherwise not exist. Elon’s nominal trillionaire status is due to his ownership of SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink, the Boring Company and his other initiatives that have brought new technologies that improve our everyday lives. Elon is not sitting on a trillion dollar pile of cash, jewelry and gold. He is using his controlling stakes in his companies to advance mankind. Elon’s companies don’t pay dividends. They reinvest all of their capital to accelerate innovation and value creation. Elon is working 24/7 for all of us. He deserves respect and appreciation, not smears. Bernie, your socialism would never allow a SpaceX to be built. Socialism has only proven to impoverish mankind and lead to death and destruction. We need to create the conditions for more SpaceXs to be built, not attack the great entrepreneurs who are helping to advance our country.

You can vehemently disagree with Palestine Action activists goals, whilst simultaneously be horrified a judge can decide AFTER a conviction if it was terrorism related amd double a sentence. Being able to class an offense as terrorism AFTER conviction without charging them with terrorism should bother everyone. Any protest action that is now determined as trying to "change government policy" can have this applied. So today it's Palestine Action, but next it'll be immigration protests, farmers protests, NHS, tax etc etc.

@CharlieMoloney Media law, huh? So you don't know dick about mitigating factors, about being banned from saying WHY they did it, having pros witnesses LIE, police hide evidence, ministers in contempt by commenting on "broken back" bullshit.

There's lots of aggravating factors here, but just the value of the damage alone makes the sentence not shocking. One can argue over the terrorist connection aggravating factor. The Court of Appeal can look at that if its wrong, as it seems a point that isn't raised often

There's just one small problem: The celebration is being held on the site of AlManshiyya/ المنشية،، a Palestinian neighborhood in Jaffa that was destroyed during the Nakba in 1948 when its residents were expelled from their homes. It's hard not to see the irony in building a polished image on top of the ruins of Palestinian homes and the legacy of Palestinian suffering.

@afneil You think inequality, of no order of magnitude, makes democracy harder to sustain? Take it up with Aristotle. Or Teddy Roosevelt.

@afneil A) as we’ve discussed before, you don’t need to quote tweet. B) You know as well as I do that extraordinarily concentrated wealth makes a difference to the lives of everyone in a democracy.

The 1960s apartheid govt of South Africa labelled the ANC as terrorists and used a compliant judiciary to suppress their activists and supporters. Today's British govt uses the same tactics against Palestine Action and its supporters. Here's a photo of Judge Quartus de Wet who sentenced Nelson Mandela to life in prison, alongside Judge Jeremy Johnson who yesterday sentenced four Palestine Action activists as terrorists, even though they were never charged with terrorism, because such a charge would've been thrown out by every jury in the land. Johnson would have fitted in very well in South Africa's apartheid regime.

@lewis_goodall @afneil Given Elon splurged $44bn to save democracy (by ensuring free debate and combating disinformation) I am not sure your argument holds much water. Now, if he were using all that wealth to censor or to spread misinformation, then you'd have a pont. So, turn your turret to Soros.

@afneil Th biggest differences between the USA and Britain, appetite for risk and attitude to money. Musk has made an enormous contribution to the USA. He's also made an enormous contribution to Ukraine via StarLink. The jealous are blind to both.

BREAKING: Justice Jeremy Johnson has ruled that the Filton 4 will be sentenced as terrorists – even though two juries refused to convict them of violence charges over their efforts to disable an Israeli factory in the UK making killer drones for use in Gaza. They were found guilty of a minor charge of criminal damage. Judge Johnson kept the jury in the dark of his plans to sentence the four as terrorists. This is the first time in British legal history that anyone has been sentenced as a terrorist for damaging property. It's a very dark moment in an increasingly authoritarian Britain. Thousands of legal professionals complained about Johnson's clear abuses of legal procedures to help the government's case for proscribing Palestine Action as a terrorist group. Johnson has now proved this was always a show trial. I explain how he rigged the two trials here: jonathancook.substack.com/p/legal-profes…
