I think the answer is obvious.
Staios has been interested in Robertson, Weegar, Anderson, Kyrou, etc. Big names that reportedly did not want to waive to come here.
If Ersson or Burakovsky were UFAs, no guarantee they’d pick Ottawa, even if they didn’t have a lineup of suitors.

What I don't really understand about the Ersson and Burakovsky deals is that, if you like the players, okay. But, why the rush and urge to trade assets when they did instead of waiting until after qualifying offers were due or on July 1st? What was the rush?

Ottawa’s only path to contention is and always will be drafting and developing. After this weekend’s picks, you hopefully get an injection of youth towards the end of 18 and 85’s deals that convince them that they can win in Ottawa.

@jackrichrdson Almost every player under 25 doesn’t have an NTC. Guys like McTavish and Peterka should have been the target. Dorofeyev was an rfa , maybe he didn’t want a longterm extension here idk

In a lot of ways, William Eklund was tasked with producing away from Celebrini this season as San Jose's secondary scoring platoon... And it's fair to say he did exceptionally well playing with the likes of Alex Wennberg more than Macklin Celebrini
There's a massive opportunity for Eklund now in Ottawa, while we might not have a Celebrini, a Stützle, a Cozens, or a Pinto, all offer Eklund something different but complementary to his skills

Marchment is fine, but will likely get too much term on an overpay.
I would be alright with Arvidsson and Bourque, but I am really into the idea of Anders Lee.
Lee+Eklund+Burakovsky might be your best Tkachuk replacement possible without spending all your assets

But I hope they didn’t get him for the top 6. Need to wait and find out

I’m pretty confident the Sens will start the year with Eklund-Stutzle-Zetterlund as the top line. They don’t have the right body to complement/keep up with the Batherson and Cozens connection. That’s not Burakovsky or any other forward they have now. Need one more big move.
