@charlesharriso5 Drug dealers, gangs, recruiting our youth for lighter sentences? I am asking - I believe to be true to some extent? But you would know. Evil grows unless checked. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us.

Many believe that rebuilding the black family and having fathers actively involved in their children’s lives is the key to solving urban youth violence. I wish it were that simple. If a father is involved in drug dealing, lives the thug and gangsta lifestyle, and uses violence to resolve conflicts, he does not serve as a positive role model for his children. Instead, he becomes a negative influence, guiding them toward the wrong choices. Addressing urban youth violence is complex, and sometimes the root problem starts at home.

@Indy_reporter_ We do need tough accountability that stays within the law. When my son was murdered in 2020 they brought in the feds who arrested and destroyed (mostly) the gang responsible. Bring in the feds if it helps today. More resources.

The "juveniles" have no fear. They know the police, prosecutor, and courts won't do anything. Over the last 7 years, it feels like each IMPD chief has been softer than the last: • Randall Taylor — soft during the riots. • Chris Bailey — publicly pleading with juveniles to behave. • Tanya Terry — telling the public to help raise other people's kids. Indianapolis doesn't need another lecture. It needs strong leadership, accountability, and someone willing to draw a line. Indy needs its version of Clay Higgins

I am not going to apologize for my focus as a 65-year-old black male on addressing the issue of urban violence as a disproportionate impact on black males in America. Very few black families in America have not been impacted by urban violence. For six decades, urban violence has been a national public health crisis. Data from the CDC Injury Center and the National Violent Death Reporting System underscore the severity of this public health crisis. Sadly, homicide remains the leading cause of death among young Black men, particularly in the 1–19 and 20–44 age groups. Black males experience the highest homicide rates of any racial or ethnic group in the nation. In many cases, this rate is more than 10 times higher than that of white males of the same age. Most of these homicides—often between 80% and 90%, depending on the year—are carried out with firearms, making gun violence a key factor in these statistics.

The status quo in Marion County of coddling criminals has to stop. As your next prosecutor, I will: 🎯Tackle juvenile crime head-on: clear standards and real consequences; we can't afford to ignore this crisis or treat juvenile offenders like they are the victims. 🎯Refocus the office away from political trends and back towards the core mission: enforcing the law, seeking justice for victims, and protecting the public. 🎯Repair partnerships across the justice and public safety systems: public safety in Marion County requires an all-hands-on-deck approach rather than a prosecutor who alienates police, surrounding prosecutors, the statehouse, and every other potential partner. Thanks, @hammerandnigel and @93wibc.

@RickFOP86 The drug dealers are recruiting our youth because they are not punished as severely as adults. They do not care how many lives they destroy. The parents often are addicted to drugs. Others try to break this cycle but so hard. Pray, wake up, and hold to account.

🚨 Fox’s Dan Bongino just gave a REALITY CHECK on why liberal cities have huge numbers of violent crimes @WillCain: "What's the one thing we can do to stop this type[violent] of crime?" @DBongino: "Get ready for it, because it's not rocket science! You just have to ARREST BAD GUYS!" "Ask former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, who dropped the crime rate dramatically in just a few years. When you go out and arrest violent criminals, violent crime doesn't happen!"

Britain had a moment of silence for George Floyd. Our politicians kneeled en masse to show their outrage at his killing. "I can't breathe" became a slogan. George Floyd died on the other side of the world. He wasn't British. Henry Nowak *was* British and his treatment by the police was shocking and negligent in the extreme. Yet there is no minute of silence. There is no coordinated public campaign. There is no kneeling at sporting events. And we all know why. During the summer of BLM, some people said "All Lives Matter". This was treated as the highest form of racism and anyone who said this was immediately cancelled. Why? Because the people in charge don't actually think all lives matter in the same way. They have created a racial hierarchy of victimhood where a career criminal who died through mistreatment by police in a foreign country with 0 evidence of racism like George Floyd is automatically sanctified because of the colour of his skin. And Henry Nowak, a British man, one of ours, is automatically dismissed and ignored because of the colour of his. This is the ugly fruit of so-called "anti-racism", an obsession with race that has created a two-tier society which treats people differently because of the colour of their skin. This needs to stop.

Well said, @Jim_Banks "And the rest of Indiana is punished for Marion County’s refusal to act. Ryan Mears is a prosecutor gone rogue. He refuses to keep violent criminals behind bars and is an absolute failure of a prosecutor.... If we keep making excuses for why we can’t enforce the law and keep violent criminals in prison, we will never have safe neighborhoods and communities—and innocent people like Brett will continue pay the price."

Senator Banks Remembers Brett Scrogham on Senate Floor WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Senator Jim Banks (R-Ind.) delivered remarks on the Senate floor about the senseless murder of 23-year-old Brett Scrogham and the urgent need for Indianapolis to end soft on crime policies that have enabled violent crime.
“Madam President, 23-year-old Brett Scrogham of Greenwood, Indiana had a bright future ahead of him. After graduating as a top 100 student from the IU Kelley School of Business, Brett had plans to invest in housing properties and help his community grow and prosper. As a young child, Brett helped a neighbor rescue her dogs from a terrible house fire. Friends of his referred to him as “a God-fearing Christian man,” who was always willing to help people. Though I never had the chance to meet him, it’s clear to me that Brett was really an incredible person. And now I’ll never get the chance to meet this bright young man. Tragically, Brett was murdered in cold blood this weekend on his way to an Indians game with his family. The killing took place in a parking garage next to the biggest church in Indianapolis. College students and young families park there every week. I am heartbroken by this senseless act of violence. Brett’s family are in my thoughts and prayers, and I hope that the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department will arrest the murderer soon, who is still at large. The Mayor of Indianapolis put out a weak statement that didn’t even mention Brett’s name, and so I wanted to come down to the floor and talk about who he was and what’s happening in Indianapolis. Brett’s murder is the second murder in downtown Indianapolis in less than a week. Just before the Indy500, Gregory Anderson, a father of five children, was murdered in the downtown bar district in Indianapolis. And then last Sunday, a 16-year-old teenager was murdered in the Northwest Side of Indy. Mr. President, these murders have no place in Indiana, especially in our capitol city. Indianapolis is truly a great city, and it has so much going for it. Indy is home to incredible businesses, world-class sporting events like the Indy500 which took place last week, and so much more. But what’s been happening in Indianapolis is an epidemic. Soft on crime policies are ruining this great city. How much longer will we allow this to go on? The reason Indianapolis is plagued by violent crime is because Marion County lets it happen. Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears refuses to prosecute violent criminals. For example, one man in Indiana has faced over 30 criminal charges, most of them felony charges in Marion County, since 2020. This man should be locked up forever. But he’s not, thanks to Ryan Mears, liberal judges, and all of their soft-on-crime polices. And the rest of Indiana is punished for Marion County’s refusal to act. Ryan Mears is a prosecutor gone rogue. He refuses to keep violent criminals behind bars and is an absolute failure of a prosecutor. And it’s not only the prosecutor that refuses to enforce the law. State Sen. Andrea Hunley, also a Democrat, recently said with regards to crime in Indianapolis that “We are not going to ever enforce our way out of the problem.” That is not only a lie; it’s also an excuse. If we keep making excuses for why we can’t enforce the law and keep violent criminals in prison, we will never have safe neighborhoods and communities—and innocent people like Brett will continue pay the price. Everyone wants to talk about fairness, dignity and legal protections for criminal defendants. But what about Brett? Where was his fairness? Why do we talk about the dignity of criminals and never the dignity of their victims? We know how to keep our cities safe: we need to put large amounts of police officers on patrol, let them do their job, and ensure that criminals remain in prison. But the opposite keeps happening. @93wibc

Horrific update to breaking news I reported on Thursday. The young man shot in the parking garage in downtown Indianapolis near the convention center has died. The Marion County coroner confirms 23-year-old Brett Scrogham died from his injuries. Multiple sources have told me and I have confirmed through IU’s online records that Scrogham recently graduated from IU’s Kelley School of Business and was named one of the top in his class. Multiple sources also tell me that Brett was parking in the garage downtown near the convention center to attend the Indians game with his family when he was shot. We have reached out to IMPD to see if an arrest has been made in this case and we are still waiting to hear back. More to come.

Indy has seen 274 shootings and 90 stabbings, leading to 55 homicides in 149 days in 2026. The city is on pace for 135 homicides in 2026 unless something changes. The city continues to trend downward in homicides, down from our historical record of 271 in 2021. The first goal is to bring the homicide numbers down under 100. Then, we will establish our second goal in homicide reductions as a city. I believe there are four strong components to reducing urban violence: intervention, prevention, enforcement, and accountability. Cities must depoliticize violence reduction strategies and use best practices in violence reduction to eradicate this cancer that is disproportionately impacting communities of color.

I have sad news this morning: Susie Mays passed away last night to be with Jesus, shortly after celebrating her 105th birthday in April. What a remarkable and blessed life Susie Mays lived. Not many people live to be 105. The Barnes United Methodist Church extends our thoughts and prayers to the Mays family. As her pastor, I say, "Well done, Sister Susie Mays, thou good and faithful servant." Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he died, yet shall he live. “To eliminate suffering entirely would mean, in the end, extinguishing love and desire as well. Those who love and desire cannot avoid passing through trial and suffering; and over the years, we carry within us lessons that leave their mark like scars, the memories of a journey shaped by freedom and failure, dreams and disappointments. It is only thanks to the interplay of these elements that the wonders of the soul occur within us, allowing us to sense the richness of our humanity. To renounce this adventure, both tragic and splendid, in the name of a presumed transcendence of all limits, could mean many things, but it would no longer be human.” Pope Leo XIV, Magnifica Humanitas (par. 120) (May 15, 2026)
